- Randi| 1 replyThis IS indeed MACU. We have an account through them and I googled the MACU website because I had a fraud protection call and YES they are MACU.
- Caller: Mountain America Credit Union
- B-Edwards replies to RandiKeep in mind that the number you lookup for yourself and call, should be the correct number, a number you can trust. The problem is scammers can spoof that number and even an name in your caller ID. It is always safer to thank take down the info, not confirm or offer personal info, and then call back on a number you trust.

if you are notified of a problem with your card,
CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD

YOU SHOULD CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD - AustinThis is a real and legitimate call. It is from Mountain America Credit Union fraud prevention.
- Caller: macu
- Call type: Valid
- Krista| 7 repliesFraud prevention from MACU. Got a call from them, I did indeed have fraudulent charges on my card, so they cancelled it. It's the real deal.
- Caller: MACU
- Call type: Valid
- Well.. replies to KristaYour call may have been the "real deal", however, scammers routinely spoof legitimate numbers. Better to be safe and call the number on your financial institution's webpage or the number on the back of your card!
- MikeHuntleton replies to Krista| 4 repliesIts already been established this is a legitimate number for Mountain America Credit Union.Quote:Mountain America may call you to verify transactions on your account if the transactions appear to be outside of your normal pattern. Mountain America will not ask you for personal information but may ask you to verify information that we provide. You may also receive calls from our Visa Fraud Prevention Automated Alert service, which will come from the number 1-855-822-1243. If you need to contact us, please use the number listed on your statement, debit card or credit card.
The fact people keep attempting to reassure everyone this is a legitimate number, despite the warnings that it could be spoofed by scammers, only reinforces that scammers ARE spoofing it.
It only takes one post to know who it legitimately belongs to and doubtful that many people are looking up a number they KNOW is legit, so beware everyone, scammers are spoofing this number! Scammers like to shill about the actual business when they are spoofing a number it belongs to, so you get a secure feeling about giving up personal info. Do Not trust the caller! - BigA replies to KristaThen there was absolutely no reason for you to look up the number afterword, since you claim to absolutely know who called you and why.
- NikkiThe number doesn't ask you to provide any information. It asks you to verify what it already knows. It tell a you if you prefer, you can call the number on the back of your card. It also says If you don't have an account or if it's not your information it has, to disregard. Wrong numbers happen. The automated machine will list off some dates and vendors where you used your card and just ask if the transactions are yours. This number is listed on my credit unions official website and on their app. If it's fraud, it's the most convincing fraud ever. You can always call a live rep and have them do it, but they confirm the number that's calling you.
- Caller: Macu
- Call type: Valid
- nikki replies to MikeHuntleton| 3 repliesAre the scammers going to ask you to provide information though? When it's a legit call the automated machine doesn't ask for info. It gives you info and you tell it yes or no. That's it. It already knows your social/dob/last 4 of the card. If it's a scam, that would be all they need and they wouldn't bother calling, right?
- MikeHuntleton replies to nikki| 2 replies
Yes, thats what some scammers do, its called "phishing".Quote:Are the scammers going to ask you to provide information though?
I doubt EVERY call is automated and only asks yes or no questions to confirm your ID.Quote:When it's a legit call the automated machine doesn't ask for info.........you tell it yes or no
Some scammers do have automated machines and use "hacked" info to gain your trust, so you give them the info they don't have, then they can access your account. Banks are major targets for scammers, since almost every type of financial transaction can be done online and its not difficult to spoof IP addresses and be totally anonymous while accessing your account.
Its best not to trust a caller if you were not expecting a call, even if its someone you do some sort of business with. Call back from a number you KNOW is them. Scammers are getting very high tech these days and can steal money right from an ATM machine, so with a little info from a call, they can clean out your account before you know it. - Nikki replies to MikeHuntleton| 1 replyAh. Makes sense. I work for a financial institution and have to make outbound calls so it's always interesting to see what makes people wary about trusting us. My call, the machine had all of my info already so I didn't give it any. I just figured it they already know my social, card number, and DOB, then If it was a scam they wouldn't even need to talk to me anymore seeing as how they have my info already. If the machine asks for anything other than a yes or a no I can see why that would be concerning though. Better to be safe than sorry.
- MikeHuntleton replies to NikkiMost people don't get a lot of calls from a fraud alert and it would probably be the first time getting one for most people, so they would not know the difference from a scammer who learned the process and is able to mimic it.
I am not sure why an automated call would be needed to make people confirm they are the account holder, when a simple message stating "This is MACU calling. An alert has been placed on your account for fraudulent activity. Please call the number on the back of your card to restore your account" would be all anyone needs to remedy the situation if they were a customer and indeed have a fraud alert. If it is a wrong number, then that person would know its not for them and it wouldn't matter. A generic message like that would reassure ANYONE, client or non-client, who is calling instantly.
The automated confirmation of an account holder should be when THEY call back inquiring about their account, not when informing them of a fraud alert. - Due Diligence replies to CWG40While this is in some cases an attempted scam, Visa does offer Fraud Protection services (they call it Falcon) and will reach out to verify unusual activity. They have your phone number that you gave them, they know it's you. If they ask for card information, that's sketchy. If it's just asking you to confirm yes/no if certain transactions are you, then it's likely a legitimate call.
A lot of people hear automated calls from your "financial institution" and immediately think scam. Notice how most people saying it's legit and from Mountain America Credit Union (MACU) and how they followed up to confirm it's legit, whereas people who say it's a scam did not mention anything about follow up research?
Do your due diligence and make decisions for yourself. Take everything with a grain of salt, especially on the internet. - Justin replies to deniseMountain America Credit Union
- Jayden replies to CWG40| 3 repliesSo I also called MACU and they were able to confirm they were calling me. The best way to check if something is a scam or not is to check with legitimate sources.
- Kristy| 1 replyThey called with a caller ID "MountainAmrCrd" and told me they were fraud prevention services for my credit union. They actually used the last 4 digits of a visa debit card that has been closed for a few months. They asked for the last four of my social security number at which point I hung up. But they called again a few hours later.
- Caller: Scam
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- Kristy replies to KristyI will also say I did call my credit union and They confirmed that it was not them who had called me.
- Kristy replies to Jayden| 2 repliesThat is strange. I called and told Mountain America that I received the call and they told me They did NOT call me and to NEVER give out social security number info over a phone call.
