got a call today, didn't answer

Got an scary call from them. Sounding like the police. Demanding to verify my birthdate. Wouldnt give me any info about who or what they wanted said he had been hired to find me. I hung up.

Whoever this was left a voicemail saying a family member had used my name as an awesome reference. The call back number was a dead giveaway that he was not who he claimed to be.

Called asking for information regarding an individual (Sharon Madison) who I have no knowledge of. When asked how they had an association link between this person and myself (prior to stating I didn't know the individual), the associate got sketchy. I said that if they gave me some context, it could job my memory. Didn't have any context, just said that their collection of media said I was friends with her. Which...I am not. Data mining, probably trying to confirm cell phone number/name of owner for further exploitation.

Answered the call from this number looking for information on my niece. The woman refused to give me any information on what it regarded and stated it was due to a "personal business matter." She was very deceitful stating at first that my niece had given my name and phone number for a "reference." I found this hard to believe since my niece has never called me, ever. Not sure if she even knows my number, as my brother and I have been estranged for years. After I explained this, and asked how did you get my number, she slipped up and told me she found my number on the internet. I called her out in the lie, which she continued to deny, then she said, "I'm terminating this call, ma'am." LOL Ok, she sure showed me. Hahahaha. I would never give anyone's information to a stranger on the phone who's not willing to tell me where they are calling from and what it is regarding. Maybe not even then.

After Googling this number I certainly will not answer after reviewing the abusive nature of the caller.  I normally ID the number and answer the next time they call but in this case it seems that the caller is so vile that I would be a fool to do so. Why would anyone open themselves up to abuse from an ass like this caller?  Thanks for the input guys you make it easier to avoid these kind of people.
