- Loren Dorstad| 3 repliesI called this number 855-972-1168 when my computer locked up and the window said call Microsoft at this number immediately to fix my computer. the man answered and was a foreigner and got into my computer. I asked him 3 times who he worked for and he said Microsoft. I am thinking he doesn't work for Microsoft and he lied.

- Dana replies to Loren DorstadHi there, I'm just curious if you had any other issues with this? The exact situation happened to my father today.
- Marlene replies to Loren DorstadSame thing happened to me today. Computer locked up and a message from Microsoft said to call they tech at that number. So I've been hacked They wanted me to purchase a1to3 year service contract starting at 269.99 and network security for 79.99 a yr. I called my my tech person (son-in-law) with the other phone and he said power off its a scam. So I did. Not sure what he got up to then
- stlarrySame experience with my computer. I immediately restart and look up the number; on three occasions yesterday with three different numbers, they all related to an India cell phone. I don't believe they discovered any data or got it from my laptop.

- AmandaThis happened to me today too I don't know what to do now.
- Rochelle| 2 repliesMy computer froze up with a message informing me that I must call 1-855-972-1168 immediately. I couldn't do anything else with the computer so I called. I dealt with a rude woman named Aparna. She wanted my info & said it would cost me $269. & some odd cents. I did not feel comfortable continuing with the phone call & I definitely did not want to give her my CC# so I told her that I felt it was a scam. She asked several times if I'd like to speak to her supervisor. She was trying a little too hard to keep me on the phone with her. I said thank you very much & hung up with her. She does have my full name & my e-mail address. These people need to be shut down. I will work on making that happen.
- Caller: Windows
- Slim replies to RochelleIf the scammers accessed the computer, they probably did one or more of the following:
• Disabled the anti-virus software
• Added nasty malware to the computer
• Copied the Contact List (so they can spam/email your soon-to-be ex-friends)
• Copied any financial data or passwords they could find
• Compromised your ID
• "Zombied" the computer, so it would respond to THEIR commands sent via internet
• Deleted some important files
• Asked for money to repair the damage they caused
What can you do immediately after such an attack?
1. Pull the cables on the computer, or otherwise disable it, so it cannot access the internet.
2. Change ALL passwords stored on the computer
3. Run FULL malware scans on the computer, in "SAFE" mode!
4. Change the passwords again, particularly if the malware scans showed anything
5. Inform your bank and credit card companies
6. Sign up for credit monitoring, and check the status frequently
7. You may have to bring the computer to a local repair shop, and tell them the story.
8. Tell friends what happened, so they can be aware of strange emails from you
9. Plug in the cables only AFTER all the above have been done
10. Change the passwords on all online accounts. Even better - access a "safe", uninfected computer, and chance your online account passwords RIGHT NOW.
NOTE:
If your computer set a "Restore Point" while it was infected, any "System Restore" you make will re-infect your computer. Suggest you delete any potentially infected restore points and avoid setting such restore points until after your computer has been thoroughly cleaned!
