They call themselves ACM .  Possibly Acquire Capital Management . Perhaps Asset Capital Management.  Admitted he was a debt collector.  First he said "mediation" group, then started to say legal firm.  Typical nonsense you get from these kitchen-table debt collectors.  ACM has a history on 800notes.com of calling people and constantly threatening to serve papers on them.  Magically transforming old debts into bad check charges.  Telling people they call that there are "warrants" out for them.   This group may possibly be linked with this case the FTC filed.  See:  http://www.ftc.gov/enforcement/cases-proceedi ... roup-acmg-et-al
Notice the similarity in names.   The use of three letters to describe this so-called "company" is typical of  debt scammers.

    Paraphrasing the above case:

According to the FTC,  these  people  (in the case mentioned) use standard debt scamming techniques,  deception, abuse, and harassment to carry out their pattern of debt collection .  They purchase   distressed consumer debts and collect payment on their own behalf by means of deception and threats.
Their stock collection  practices include impersonating process servers in debt collection calls to  consumers and third parties; falsely threatening consumers with legal action, wage   garnishment, property seizure, and arrest; disclosing debts to third parties; and   failing to notify consumers of their right to receive verification of their alleged debts.
They  extract  payment from consumers through misrepresentations aimed at convincing them that a debt collection lawsuit has  been filed or  will be filed against them and will result in devastating   consequences unless the consumer immediately pays.

They use  a two-step process to extract money deceptively from consumers.

The first step involves misrepresenting their status as process  servers or employees of law firms. The collectors call consumers or third parties in the guise of a process server or an employee of a law office They then  state that they need to confirm that the consumer will be in a certain location, frequently the consumer's workplace - at a certain time.

The second step involves misrepresenting the  consequences consumers will face for nonpayment of purported debts .  When the  consumer or third party asks  what has prompted such  action, the caller gives the call recipient a  telephone number for the consumer to call for information,  often along with a  "case number."

Often, the collector warns that if the consumer does not call back within a limited time period, generally two or three hours, the consumer will be served with a lawsuit or, in some instances, arrested.

In fact, they  are not process servers seeking to serve legal papers on consumers.  Nor do they work for or with lawyers who are preparing lawsuits against consumer

When a consumer calls the number provided in the initial call and speaks with another of   the  collectors,  the collectors  assert that consumers owe money on a purported debt.

In some instances, ' collectors also misrepresent their status as lawyers, or employees of law offices  Collectors advise consumers that they will be sued and have their wages garnished or property seized if they do not pay the alleged debt.

Many consumers  agree  to pay a  settlement even though they are unsure if the debt was valid because they were afraid of the threatened consequences.

In many cases,  the collectors claim  that they have filed, or intend to file imminently, lawsuits against consumers, or that nonpayment of purported debts will result in arrest or  seizure, garnishment, or attachment of property or wages.

    _____________

There's no doubt in my mind that this ACM is engaging in the same sort of activities.   If they call and start their nonsense just tell them you are gong to report them to the FTC.

See:  http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection   and reference the above cited link to the FTC case.
