- Tara| 2 repliesThey claim to be Certified Document Services. They asked me if I knew a certain person. Then they asked me to pass a message to that person...with a telephone number to call...with a package number for the person to reference when they call. Strange
- Caller: Certified Document Services
- Dana replies to Taraprob a scam. I just got the call too.
- Nan replies to TaraI did too, and the weird thing is they started with a statement "we are trying to reach..." and it was someone I knew. They also had their address. Don't know what this is about but I also agree it is bogus.
- SteveI received a voice message from this number they said they were trying to get in touch with my younger brother... They claimed to be a Certified Document service co the name left was Sophia Patterson when I tried to call to get info to pass to my Brother I was told that it was a Law Firm and when I told them I was not my Brother they got very rude and was cursing at me telling me not to waste their time
- Caller: Document Services
- MissThey just called my mothers home phone looking for me with a married name that I have not been for over 10 years.!!.. They said the same exact thing you guys are saying.. dose anyone have any more information on this..
- Nunya| 1 replyJust received this call just now. Really weird..... I know I don't owe anything to anyone, so I'm assuming this is a scam. Her name was Sophia Patterson. The number on my cell phone showed up as "26".
- Caller: Certified Document Services
- Rene J.Voice message from a unknown caller looking for someone who Im fairly sure I don't know. They have certified sealed docs and left their #. Also, the message was left by a creepy old chain smoker.
- J.P.| 1 replyI got a call from 202-122-5857, they left voicemail telling me to call 855-984-0742. Foolishly I called and got an abrupt woman who claimed she was with a law firm, trying to sue me for an ancient account I had with US Bank. I closed when I disputed some bogus charges to my account, maybe 14 years ago. She said they were suing for way over any disputed amount, and did I wish to pay or go to court. I told her court, because nothing she said made any sense, then she said, "okay, but in addition to the ridiculous amount she first discussed, I would be sued for another $2K plus, for attorney's fees. I hung up. The funny thing is, I just got a loan from US Bank for a mortgage. I wonder if somebody there slipped these scammers info, because she had the last four digits of my S.S. number.

- Shirley| 1 replyPatricia said I owed money on an old account for $856.53 if not paid in two days I would have to go to court and pay over $2000.00 lawyer and court fees.
- Caller: Certified document delivery
- Slim replies to ShirleyA phone call, email, text message or postcard from a supposed debt collector is not legally sufficient proof of debt.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:
Unless the original communication contained this specific information, every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money. ["Written" means snailmailed - US Mail ... not emailed or texted]
Source:
https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection
Therefore, if that caller wants you to pay immediately, before you get the written validation notice via snailmail, or if the caller wants payment via Green Dot, MoneyGram, Western Union, prepaid gift card or other untraceable means, then the call is definitely not legitimate.
REMEMBER THIS IF YOU FORGET ALL ELSE:
1. Legally, THEY must prove you owe the debt (you do not have to prove to them that you do not owe the debt)
2. They must prove they have a legal right to collect the debt
3. They must send you snailmail with specific info within 5 days of the original contact, if you request that validation, or if that information was not provided on initial contact. You have up to 30 days to reply to that validation.
IF you wish to communicate with the supposed collector / creditor, visit the following page, for example "Action Letters" to snailmail:
http://www.consumerfinance.gov/blog/debtcollection/
If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:

They further related I needed to give my home address if I did not want to be served at work.

- AngBakThe message almost scared me, certified document services trying to contact me regarding a complaint filed against me? I tried calling the 855 984 0742 number back, no name, just a cheesy vague mess on the voice mail.
After looking them up, I remembered... These people found my husband's EX WIFE and told her they were looking for me, but by my maiden name. This is one I bet people fall for, sadly... Because they hunt down people you know and that's just too much!- Caller: Certified Document Services
- EVYup, I don't think this is legal... I didn't call back or answer. They just called me with BLOCKED CALLER ID. I was not able to answer anyway, no message was left on my number but they called my Ex and he forwarded the voicemail to me. Same thing... saying she was "Christine" from "Document Services" and a "complaint had been filed against me" and it sounded like fake legal jargon followed. I never called back and decided to Google and found all this info above... thank goodness! Sad part is, it can be very concerning if you don't know any better. Always try to do your research. My logic told me... 1) the company did not sound legit (too broad of a name), 2) I would have received some form of written notice via certified or at least regular mail delivery if I owed anybody anything and 3) never any specifics were left about the actually complaint, etc. Believe me, if you really do owe money, etc. Whoever will let you know the date, time, amount, who/company or whatever! I am a Real Estate agent as well, so I hear about these credit issues/things all the time from clients from debt collectors... Hope all this helps somebody like it did for me! Best of luck.

- Sean| 1 replyThank you all above for helping me understand clearly these calls from a certified doc delivery service requesting we call the 855-984-0742 # should not be responded to! I checked my cell phone voicemail today and heard an annoying msg from some Sarah Johnson, cert. doc delivery person, telling me about the same as all the other people's calls noted above posted on this forum. She said there was a complaint against me?! I couldn't hear the msg real well the 1st time and spent 1/2 hr. en route home trying out to figure out who filed a complaint, would be harassing or spamming me. At home after listening to the msg a few times I realized the msg was for some OTHER PERSON I'VE NEVER HEARD OF! What a relief it wasn't for me since I was bewildered why or how anyone would be calling on my new cell phone #, anyway. I'm going to try to block the #
- Caller: 855-984-0742? certified doc delivery?
- BigA replies to SeanAll phone numbers are recycled so now you know why the previous holder of that number got rid of it. It doesn't matter if the call was for someone else or for you, because it is nothing more than an attempt by an extortionist to get money from people. They will probably continue to call. Process servers do not call ahead. You should take the time to read the following:
Criminals masquerading as debt collectors attempt to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged (they use the bad check or hot check claim a lot) and go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished without actually being sued or going to court, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt. One of the tricks they use is to call your family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them and they can scare that person into paying their extortion money. They will use the words “Mediator”, “Arbitrator”, or “Law Office” to make you believe that they are something other than a debt collector want-a-be and that they don’t have to follow Federal and State collection laws. They do have to follow those laws, but they won’t. They mention that they have received a Fax document, to create the sense of urgency. They also tell you that if you fail to call them back you are "waiving your right to council", which is pretty much nothing but hogwash. They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer). Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them. Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.
If you feel you SSN has been compromised, in addition to putting a fraud alert at the 3 credit bureaus, you may want to notify the IRS. Here is the link, fill out the proper form (probably 14039). Also file a report at the FTC Identity Theft web site as well as learn what else you need to do:
http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/How-Do-You-Rep ... aud-Activity%3F
https://www.ftc.gov/faq/consumer-protection/report-identity-theft
It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and that they have the legal right to collect it. You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
List of State AG’s offices: https://800notes.com/faq/attorney-general - Resident47 replies to J.P.An account of such vintage should have been sold to a junk debt buyer long ago. Your SSN would have been readily available in whatever debt portfolio currently includes your old account. US Bank junk debts are mentioned frequently on this site, always pursued by lawbreaking bullies and never supported by genuine documentation.
