This came up when I was searching for a recipe too!  Said to call this number because my computer had a virus.  Called but got suspicious and hung up before giving them info

Same as above. Searching a recipe and said to call this number due to a porn virus. I as well panicked and called number. I was told that my firewall was down and hackers were going through my "backdoor". I would have to pay a large sum to fix my computer through the US. I put the caller on hold to answer my son's call. He told me to close the call immediately and shut down my computer. At that time the caller told me I would be responsible for any "issues". I said good bye and hung up.  He was talking something about "rootkit".

Right don't call it, I did and they wanted money for cleaning my computer

A family member thought they were calling HP and installed a program allowing them to remote into her computer to fix her printer. They proceeded to say the computer was infected and somehow managed to get this person to give her banking information. They initiated a $299 echeck from her bank to their company.

Fortunately, she called me and she was able to call the bank and stop the check. She has to change her bank account number and I am completely wiping the machine.

I'm really sad my family member was scammed and now has to deal with potential personal data breaches from these folks.
