    Not fooled
This number comes across the caller ID as only a "1". I assume to get past blocking software. when it goes to voicemail the caller ID is 585-643-5665, which is a cell phone number. The message leaves threats that if I don't call my matter may be forwarded out for legal proceedings.

Whatever. If this was a legit call I would get something in the mail. I have nothing. This is another scam. I don't trust anyone who doesn't identify themselves when they call. That is the law.

Received a call this morning from number (585) 643-5665 out of NY, USA. It was a recording of a man who said that said my name and that it was a very important legal matter and i needed to call 1-866-231-8532 and if I didn't there would be legal penalties. I called the 1-866-231-8532 and the recording said I reached the BRS Outsourcing Department and that I should have already received legal documents in the mail and someone will be with me shortly. I hung up and googled the name and cannot find any information on this company. Is this a scam?

Call from the number same number above ... 585.643.5665.  I called 866.231.8532 and asked to be removed from calling list.  They were looking for 'Ginger Renault'?  Not me...

Maybe mine said "Ginger Renault' too because i was not definite it said my name because the recording was unclear but I thought I heard my name? LOL. Thanks for posting, I was starting to get worried that my personal info was being compromised because yesterday, I received another call from a recording from my bank stating that they were replacing my card because a merchant's information has been compromised and its a merchant where I shop at.

Just ignore them. They do this all if the time. They told me that they looked for me at my place of employment and came to my home yesterday. Both claims are false. It's some sort of collection agency that has purchased old debts from other companies and are trying to collect money. They have wrong information often. These people can't do anything but make false threats on the phone. Ignore them until they go away. You can report them but it won't stop them from calling.

I rec'd a call from a Sean Smith stating he was dropping by my home or my job w/ important documentation related to a claim #.  He didn't say what it was about and no one ever showed up at my home since I work there all day long.  SCAM!!!

Sean Smith called me also and said he had been to both my place of employment and my home. Neither were true....I was concerned until I read this because I was recently involved in an identity theft scam...I will still forward the number to my attorney to further investigate...thanks for the post.

They are just a variant on the India/Pakistan payday loan scam where they threaten to arrest you or file a "criminal case against you" for a payday loan or bad check. The reason this sometimes works is because they get your personal information from either:

    1. Hacking (or insider data breaches) legitimate payday loan companies or
    2. Pretending to be a legitimate payday loan company and getting your info when you apply for a payday loan via a comparison site (most payday loan sites that appear in search results are actually comparison sites which pass your information to real and fraudulent lenders to gain a commission).

Thus, most people they call have actually had (or applied for) a payday loan at some point, and it's easy to second guess yourself when they threaten you.

These current people are a little more effective because they can actually speak English (though perhaps at an elementary school level, but accentless English anyway). With the India payday loan scam, it's easier to ignore because the guy calling says he's "John Smith" or something from "Law Investigations" in Texas but has the heavies accent you ever heard, so part of you already thinks "scam".

However, don't be fooled...these people are scammers! It's the same scam, but with native English speakers.

Do not send money, do not call back!

Remember that before any judgement can be obtained, you have to be physically served paperwork (if you aren't you can have the judgement thrown out). Also, they cannot arrest you for a civil judgement.

Despite what the payday loan industry would like you to think, defaulting on a payday loan is NOT the same as passing a bad check. A post dated check is an agreement to extend credit, NOT the same as a promise of funds (as would be the case for a current dated check that you would use to pay in the supermarket, for example).

I too received a call from 585-643-5665. What's incredibly funny is that this number is from my home town of Rochester NY so I recognized the are code right away although, not the phone number. It's all a bunch of bologna. No debt collector has can any legal criminal action against you and if they want to take any civil action you have to be notified of what they are taking action against you for by mail. Look up the fair credit reporting act.

What I have learned over time is the best thing to do is to call them and ask for their information before you confirm any of your information. Ask billing address, office phone number and who the manager in charge is. As soon as you say you know and understand your rights they're sh*t out of luck. These people have all the information they need on you but, if you throw it back in their face that you know you can not be criminally prosecuted for any debt and all debts must have written communication. No phone call is ever a valid way to serve any notice of any debt.
