They claim to be American Express. I called the number on my card, and they said they don't recognize this number as their own. Do not call them back. Report this to FTC.

Got a voice message from a number with a "336" or "333" area code (unfortuantely, I did not write this number down) which requested a return call to American Express at 866 231 9049. When I called back, I was asked for my American Express account number; fortunately, I did not have one. Then I was asked to hold for customer service, but I encountered only a recording which repeatedly asked for a 15-digit account number. I think this is a scam.

At work, someone who sort of spoke English said the call was being recorded and that my boss should call 866-231-9049 back with her account number.

    I didn't utter a sound. I hung up.

Message left stated that the call was not a telemarketing call and to call back with AmEx account number ready.

Husband phoned and was immediately asked to enter his account number. He recognized this as fraudulent and hung up. He was also suspicious as our name was never used. Reported to AmEx.

Same story as above.  Call was to my school-aged daughter's phone, who doesn't even have a card.  They're obviously hoping someone will call the number and blindly give them an Am Ex card number.

Today we arrived home from being out of town and there was a message left for us from someone claiming to be from American Express and they left the number 866-231-9049 for us to return their phone call. I immediatly called the number on the back of my card to see if why they called and American Express reported to me that it was a fraudulent and that I should get a new card ordered with a new number. FYI, never call a number left for you back. Call the number on the back of the card if you do have an account with that service provider. The same rule applies for emails. If you receive an email from a service provider asking you to follow a link for customer service regarding your account, do not do it. Go straight to your valid website address and if there is an issue they are trying to contact you about they will address it with you there.

I got the same message as reported above to call the number 866-231-9049 with my American Express account.  I thought I'd look up info before I called.  Thanks for the tips.  I would have called the AmEx number from my statement, I don't trust anyone these days.  The number called from was 336-393-1086 (which is in Greensboro, NC) and American Express was the name that came up with the number.

Repeatedly keep getting calls at our business from "American Express" asking us to call these numbers but neither are valid numbers for American Express and since I don't have a card.......They also never use your name in the message.  SCAM SCAM - don't fall into the trap.

We got a voice message, allegedly from American Express, telling us to call the phone #: 866-231-9049 about an important matter w/ our account. We called the AmEx number from our CCard and the csr told us that there are no issues w/ our account. The number above will give a greeting that it is from American Express -DON'T BE FOOLED. ITS A FRAUD!!!

Have received numerous calls from a party claiming to be AMEX. The Caller ID record I received on my phone said it was American Express calling from 1-336-393-1086. They finally left a voice message and it says it was AMEX calling about an "important matter regarding my account, that the call was not a tele-marketing call, and that I needed to call them back at 866-231-9049 with my account information."  DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER BACK -- IT IS A FRAUD!  I called AMEX at the number provided on the back of my credit card to verify the phone number I was given in the voice message and they said that the number was not a valid AMEX phone number. I called AMEX security to also have them check the phone number provided in the voice message.  AMEX security also has no record of that number as being a valid AMEX number. I asked AMEX security to investigate this number since it is fraudulent.  Never give out your credit card information to anyone who calls you and requests it over the phone -- call the number on the back of your credit card first!

Basically the same story as everyone: a voice message was left on my cell phone to call 1-866-231-9049, and I don't have an AE card. At first I thought perhaps someone stolen my identity to apply for an AE card? But thanks to this forum, among others, I did not even need to call back.

Same as above - In July 2008 I too received an automated message on my answering machine claiming to be American Express, claiming not to be a telemarketing call, saying it is an urgent matter about my account, and askng me to call back 1-866-231-9049.
My wallet with 2 VISA cards and my Social Security card had been stolen just 2 weeks prior with my cards getting used fraudulently, so I've been very wary about Identity theft issues already.
I called the number which has a phone tree that sounds much like American Express's actual phone tree, but when I got a person and didn't give them an account # (I hadn't had an active AMEX acct for years), they asked for my SSN.
I hung up and got online to find AMEX's 800 number from their valid website.

When I called AMEX's 800 number they said no such 866 number existed in their system.

I decided to call that 1-866-231-9049 back and confront them myself.
The women who answered and transfereed me around INSISTED they are AMEX, gave me their address, representative name, representative number, blah blah blah...all the while INSISTING they were the "real" American Express"

I told them they'd better stop whatever scam they were trying to run imediately, I even called the AMEX 800 number back on my cell phone and had people from both numbers on the phone with me at the same time in different ears, the "866" folks claiming to be real and the 800 folks saying whoever the 866 folks were that they were absolutely were not associated with the real American Express.

GGGGRRRRRR! I hate that such scammers exist!!!

it is American Express - their collections department. When you call the number on the back of your card it's the customer service line. They seem to have a communication issue between departments.

This is a great service. I got a call saying "This is American Express and it is very important that you call us back by the end of the day today at 866-231-9049." I don't have an American Express Card. I typed the number into Yahoo, and got this website, which seems to happen every time I get a wierd number with a suspicious message. I have used this website maybe 10 times in the last 3 years. It is a very valuable service to me. Thank you.
Obviously, I simply read the same comments by others and determined this is some group of fraudulent JERKS trying to manipulate people. It is clearly not worth my time to call them back, but it is VERY MUCH worth my time to use this valuable service. Between Caller ID and this service, I save a lot of time and energy in responding to the increasing number of fraudulent solicitations that come my way. There is a direct correlation between the economy and the number of fraud calls...huh? Thankyou 800notes! Chet

I've been getting calls from 866-231-9049 for the past 2 weeks now.  Just called the number on the back of my card and the cust rep confirmed that this is their collections department.  The customer rep put me on hold for a while but when he got back, he informed me that he spoke to the folks on the number and that they were taking my name off from their list.  Hope I don't get any more calls after this.
