This message thread has solved the mystery. The calls started up a week ago, indicating that they are coming from the United States, with similar conditions as per the reports of  everyone in this thread. I never answered them and no messages were left on my voicemail. And, yes, I also just bought a used car a few weeks ago that was financed by Scotiabank.

How is that Mazda's fault? Most manufacturers have exclusive banks to offer their interest rates (usually below prime) but you can always use another lender if you don't want their better interest rates.

Got missed call today from this number, I have loans with Scotia so it appears from this thread that they were trying to sell me something.

I kept getting a call from this number and when I answered there was never anyone there.  Like how annoying to drop what you are doing to answer a call like that.  Finally called the number back and it is ScotiaBank. When they asked how they could help me I said I wanted to be taken off their calling list. She was pleasant and apologetic, took my name and phone number and said she would make sure I wasn't bothered again.  Hope not!

Received multiple calls from this number in the last 48 hours. When I answered there was nobody on the other end. Attempting to call this number I got no answer so I've blocked this number.

This caller said she was a process server ready to deliver "important legal documents" in a county where I do not live. She said that if I wasn't at home, in this county where I do not live, she would go to the job I do not have and get my supervisor to document that I was in "direct noncompliance" with "court proceedings."
