sweep stakes scam number will show up as unknown then when you are billed for the dollar amount number will show up by the payment and the title magazine then another payment shows up for 62.40 with just the name magazine

they called on november 8, 2007. saying that i qualified for the disney sweepstakes that they would send me a diamond ring and that i qualified for a bmw and 100,000 dollars. all i had to do was subscribe to there magazines for $3.99 a week. later they said they would bill me a lump some of $62.40 for 16 months that's when i knew something was wrong and i immediately hung up. i called my disney visa card and they said that they had no idea about what was going on but that someone had just billed me for a dollar. they gave me the telephone number of the magazine company. i called them and luckily because i hung up the phone and didn't get a confirmation number i wasn't put in the system and my order wasn't placed. if it wasn't for quick thinking i would have surcome to there [***]. if you can just hang up it's not worth the hassle. cause once you have the 7digit confirmation number it's to late and there already billing you.

I had the same offer... but I wasn't able to catch all the terms as they had a hard accent and I gave them my card #. I closed that bank account after I realized they were a scam trying to get payments for something I didn't want. They would never answer the cancellation #. A few months later, and today I received a call saying I owed $900 something dollars for everything. I told them I had tried to cancel a long time ago but she said she would make a deal and only bill me 200. Sounds like [***] so... what should I do. I don't think I should have to pay for something I never received and I never got anything in the mail from them... what should I do!???

They called me on 11/16 and told me that I would get a diamond watch. be entered in some sweepstakes and 4 magazines for 3.29 or something per week.  They told me that they would be billing me for the first 16 months, 64.20 each month.  Regretably I did not hang up the phone and for some reason I gave them my credit card number.  Soon after they asked for my Social security number, which I did not give them.  I had more and more of a bad feeling as the call went on and finally I came to my senses and realized that this was probably a scam.  I told him that I was sorry but I wanted to cancell everything and I did not want to be charged.  After that he tried to get me to order for a reduced price and I told him I'm not interested in anything he has to sell and to just cancell the order.  After that he hung up on me.  I went to look at my online bank statement and it showed a one dollar authorization fee from "MAGAZINE866-269-2397 CHESAPEKE"  I called the number and it was about 8:05pm, and they closed at 8.  So I was pissed at that point.  About 10 minutes later a man calls me and asks why I cancelled.  I told him I just wasn't interested and I made it very clear I wanted nothing taken from my account.  At that point he tried to make me another offer which I didn't even let him spit out.  I said firmly that I'm not interested and that I don't want any charges taken from my account, he gave up, said fine and then hung up.  I have a really bad feeling about this and I really hope they don't deduct anything from my account.  If they do I am going to talk to my bank and either cancell the credit card or just totally close down my bank account.  It's easy to fall into these scams, but people, just hang up...the [***] don't deserve a second of your time.  I'll post and let you know what happens.

Ughhh they just called me yesterday while i was studying for finals and like an idiot, i gave them my card number. Im gonna call them right now and cancel on their [***]. Hopefully they dont take anything out.

I got the same call and to my mistake I accepted. I called them to cancel and they said I couldn't that I was obligated to pay, but I only I accepted cuz I asked the guy if I could cancel anytime and he said yes now they are telling me I can't that's not right. I cancel my credit card, but they still charged me for those magazines I don't even have. So now I don't know what to do?

aww so sorry for what happened to you. i called them and told them i wanted to cancel. The guys then said to me that I had already paid and asked if i was I SURE that i didnt want the mags (idiot was gonna still charge me and not give me any mags), so i told him very clearly that i wanted a REFUND. thankfully it worked and nothing was charged to my account. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

I too am involved in this scam, and it angers me, as much as anyone else! I ask though, has anyone tried contacting the magazine companies directly? It seems that if you go around these [***], and cancel the subscriptions manually one at a time, directly with the people who ship them, the "middle man" would have no leverage, as you have taken care of it yourself, and left them holding their dicks? Does this make sense to anyone?

yesterday i kept receiving phone calls from a lot of people. my friend's number didn't show up but she left a voicemail and i thought she was the one calling from an unknown number who was calling on her bf's phone which has every his house number blocked. so the next morning (6/25/08), i'm sitting watching tv trying to wake myself up before going to work. i get another phone call from the unknown number and i thought it was my friend so i picked up. immediately this woman with a heavy southern accent talks to me and doesn't even pronounce my name right. i knew i should've hung up the phone once i heard that but i don't know why i just kept going along with it. she offered me a diamond watch and i was eligible to win a new mustang convertible, a trip to australia for 4, or something else. and then i got transferred to her "secretary i mean no, assistant" who called himself the "supervisor." and i knew i should have hung up at that moment as well but i didn't! he was funny and nice to talk to! BE CAREFUL! they pulled me in with their easy going personality. he asked me if i like coffee and i went on saying i can't start my day without it. so throughout the whole time i was giving my card number we were talking about coffee and etc. i was dumb enough to go on with it and i gave out my socail and EVERYTHING. towards the end when he asked me to repeat everything for the millionth time for their records while a previously recorded voice came on i felt that something was weird and that there has to be problems that they keep asking me to repeat everything they said. i knew it was too late to cancel at that point and i was trying to be nice so i waited until i hung up with "patrick like the guy from spongebob" (crazy people huh). i then ran to my laptop and looked up "16 payments of 62.40 cancellation phone number" and that's how i got to this site. i had to look up the number through a different site 'cause no one posted the number here but i'll  post it. anyway i called the number right away and the operator told me the sale didn't even go through to her records yet but she gave me my cancellation verification number after i gave her my card number that i placed the order on. she then told me that i had to call back in two days to confirm that i was canceling my order. she asked why i canceled right away and i just said that i have bills to pay for. i hope and pray nothing goes wrong and it will be a clean break..i just need to make sure i call back in two days!!!! i just can't believe i got suckered into giving out all my info without even thinking 'cause we were having a pleasant conversation. =(

U will be persuaded as much as possible to buy whatever they say they are selling.  Even if u say no they ALREADY have your credit card number.  Hmmmm, how did they get your credit card number? They will manipulate u and twist your words to benefit them.  If your number is registered and private they can in some way get your phone number.  U will begin to see charges of $24.99 for a subscription on your credit card.  An 800 number will show next to the charge on your statement. As soon as u cancel, they will add a different 800 number. U will be charged once again under the different 800 number.  It is a never ending battle.  If this is happening to u, contact your credit card company ASAP.  If possible CLOSE the account. Most banks will work with u. It is IMPORTANT to dispute the charge within 60 days, preferably 30.  

This is just another way for indecent Americans trying to make it rich quick by thievery.  I guess it has become immoral to work hard for your money.

I, too, fell for the same scam - I canceled my debit card to stop payment - I've tried to tell them to cancel my subscriptions but no success - also, I was only supposed to get three mags, now I'm getting 8 - AND I DON'T READ ANY OF THEM - it's such a waste of paper, i'd like to box them up and send them back to these [***] at NRS -

also, I tried to file a complaint with the BBB, but can't make a formal complaint without their address....

does anyone know if this will adversely affect your credit?

they just tried the same thing with me. i was only supposed to pay like 40 bucks a month and thy're trying to take out that 62.40. i called to cancel because i don't work with liars and they're saying i can't that i'm obligated to keep paying or settle out for 280. they are lucky my phone died on me before i finished talking to them. the address is 3509 Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach, VA 23452

I just about fell for this scam also, but then the only reason I backed out was because I DIDN'T WANT TO GIVE MY CREDIT CARD NUMBER OVER THE PHONE.... Terrible I know, but I had a bad feeling after being patched to their supervisor.

When talking to just one of their regular reps who was being SUPER FRIENDLY, I was like wait a second what company is this, what's your website, can I have your address and toll free number etc and he couldn't answer ANY of those questions. I had to be patched to his supervisor who claimed that the guy was a newbie. OK, fine by me. After I got this Nationwide Readers Service I googled to see if there was any company website but the supervisor was like, nope your number was dialled through a computer.... What? I'm lost here.

And yeah, I kept telling her I'd rather have my boyfriend verify this company before I give you any of my information aside from my address and name and birthdate. Honestly lol, my boyfriend has more sense than me to answer these calls.

I got a call from them and I am now calling the bank because the transaction is pendng and the bank cannot do anything about it unitl the charge posts. they got me i thought it was a great deal, the "manager" was SUPER pushy. He told me that i would only pay 3.67 a month, I am disputing it with my bank!

they took my card and said I was going to get something free.  They are not to be trusted, it's a scam!

About 10 minutes later, I called the (888) number on the bottom of your post and cancelled the order. I also cancelled my credit card and asked the bank to issue a new one, so my fingers are crossed that I caught it in time.

So I just got a call from these people too, not sure if it was this number exactly. Basically, everything everyone else said on here held true for me... Super Friendly "customer service reps", "You've been entered in the Visa Mastercard Sweepstakes! Diamond watch, blah blah, magazines at low low price, blah blah", then I was transferred to the "Supervisor" who, of course, wanted to get my information. Luckily, when he asked me to "verify" my credit card number... I slammed on the brakes. As I asked him for some information about the company, it became apparent that he was trying to swindle me: fast talking, number manipulation, trying anything to get me to go through with the order... EVEN after I firmly told him to CANCEL!! So I googled them to see if they had a website or any scam reports and what did I find?! NO website, infact, no other mention of this company "Nationwide Reader Service" other than as a scam!! I was still on the phone with this "Supervisor", so I told him that I googled the company and found only scam reports, and to CANCEL my order once and for all, and gave him a lesson in manners, at that... because they are not so friendly once you try to cancel. Never gave him my card number, so hopefully they won't be able to bill me, but yeah! HANG UP as SOON as you heard the word "Congratulations!" because that was 47 minutes of my life I will never get back, and if I had given them more information, that could have been money out of my bank account. GOOD LUCK!

omg. i think i got called probably sometime in august and am just now getting to cancel my order..they told me i owed 873 dollars not including what i had already paid which by now is over 400 dollars. so yea..im not the smartest person in the world. and. i just so happened to be lucky enough to get a supervisor with a heart.. i just got married on friday and already we have a gazillion bills to pay so when i found out i owed 800+ of course i freaked out..then he said he could take it to 200ish and i was still freakin out..i dont have enough money to pay 200 to cancel a subscription i never really wanted to begin with.. so i should have said no. but i didnt.. but neway..he was really nice about it while i was crying over the phone like a baby. and he actually canceled my sub for free without making me pay anything.,. i couldnt thank him enough..i wanted to ask for his address so i could send him a card or something but i thought that would be awkard.. but yea..he told me in the future to be careful,listen, say no. and for that i thank him.i hope he is blessed some way in his life..but yeah guys im sorry to those of you who got caught up in it and are still suffering..and to those who got out im glad you did.i wish no one would have to suffer like this. :(

I fell into the same trap you guys did, I stupidly gave them my debit card info and let them convince me to pay for these magizines. Once I looked them up on the internet I cancelled my debit card number after seeing that they had already charged my account. About a week later I get a letter in the mail with a total of $1,297 to be charged to my account. I called the number 888-234-6647 and told them my name and told them I wanted to cancel. She offered to lower my rates and I said no, I want to cancel everything. She said that I agreed to pay for these magazines and I said I wasn't paying for anything more than they had already taken out. As I had already changed my card number I knew they couldn't take any more out so I was playing hardball. After insisting that I wasn't going to pay she said she would cancel my service. Hopefully this is the last I hear of them

I got the call twice and the lady said i wouldn't get billed an extra fee after the first time i go the call and agreed.  Now I'm getting billed for 2 different transactions when i didn't agree to the second one.  SO i have a feeling that they are going to edit it so it sounds like i said yes to both.

I'm very upset about this and i tried calling to cancel due to the fact that i don't want this and cant afford it cause i lost my job.  How am i suppose to pay something i don't even have the money for.  They told me i had to pay a lump sum of like 300+ dollars and it would stop but if i don't have a job where am i suppose to come up with the money.  I don't like this.

As someone else said i do recall them saying we could cancel at any time and it wasn't a contract so where did this slip if there's 2 of us who heard that???  This is a HUGE scam and i hope people read this.
