    You most certainly should look into it. These people are in my opinion pulling some sort of scam. They called me June 20th, between 6 and 7 PM, and informed me that they would like me to settle a debt. They then said it was with Providia Bank at which point I told them I didn't know what they were talking about. Then this girl tells me I have a Visa card with providia bank that I owe money on. I tell her I own no such card and I still don't know what she's talking about. Then she tells me the card charged out in 1998 which is far as I know means it was paid off and cancelled. I never even owned a credit card until like 2003 in the first place. Then she angrily asks if I'm "MY NAME HERE" and I tell her yes, which I guess was stupid, then she asks for the last digits of my SSN which I stupidly gave out. Then she goes oh its not you and hangs up. So I star 69'd and called them back. The greeting is said really fast and slurred when answered and when I asked them to say it slower or clarify it they refused. They also flat out refuse to SIMPLY spell the name of their ALLEGED company, which is really suspicious. I then told them that I needed to look into their company because they are asking for really wrong info and they refuse to give the company name. I then lost my cool and totally freaked out and started swearing at the man who I was transferred to. This man by the way identified himself as Cortez Jones and based on a silent call I received after the screaming match with his mystery company, this right here 312-704-9337, is probably his cell#.

    So personally, I don't think you should pay these people one dime. They are either scammers or complete morons.

    Send the scammers and morons a cease communication letter and stay OFF the phone with them!

    Today's Date

    Your Name
    Your Address

    Collector's Name
    Collector's Address

    Dear {insert name of collector or company},

    I am writing in response to your (letter or phone call) dated {insert date}, (copy enclosed) because I do not believe I owe what you say I owe.

    This is the first I've heard from you, or any other company on this matter therefore, in accordance with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Section 809(b): Validating Debts:

    (b) If the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period described in subsection (a) that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, or that the consumer requests the name and address of the original creditor, the debt collector shall cease collection of the debt, or any disputed portion thereof, until the debt collector obtains verification of the debt or any copy of a judgment, or the name and address of the original creditor, and a copy of such verification or judgment, or name and address of the original creditor, is mailed to the consumer by the debt collector.

    I respectfully request that you provide me with the following information:

    (1) the amount of the debt;
    (2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;
    (3) Provide a verification or copy of any judgment (if applicable);
    (4) Proof that you are licensed to collect debts in (insert name of your state)
    Be advised that I am fully aware of my rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act. For instance, I know that:

    because I have disputed this debt in writing within 30 days of receipt of your dunning notice, you must obtain verification of the debt or a copy of the judgment against me and mail these items to me at your expense;
    you cannot add interest or fees except those allowed by the original contract or state law.
    you do not have to respond to this dispute but if you do, any attempt to collect this debt without validating it, violates the FDCPA;
    Also be advised that I am keeping very accurate records of all correspondence from you and your company including recording all phone calls and I will not hesitate to report violations of the law to my State Attorney General, the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau.

    I have disputed this debt; therefore, until validated you know your information concerning this debt is inaccurate. Thus, if you have already reported this debt to any credit-reporting agency (CRA) or Credit Bureau (CB) then, you must immediately inform them of my dispute with this debt. Reporting information that you know to be inaccurate or failing to report information correctly violates the Fair Credit Reporting Act § 1681s-2. Should you pursue a judgment without validating this debt, I will inform the judge and request the case be dismissed based on your failure to comply with the FDCPA.

    Finally, if you do not own this debt, I demand that you immediately send a copy of this dispute letter to the original creditor so they are also aware of my dispute with this debt.

    P.S-A family member sent a cease communication letter similar to the one above to two other thug collection agencies and their attorneys last year who were also harassing him about a debt that he didn't owe. They tucked their tails behind them and ran into the sunset.

    Send, send, SEND that letter today!

    The way I see it, if they have a name and phone number, then they have an address, and EVERYTHING should be in writing. STAY OFF THE PHONE.  While I truly believe that we should take responsiblility of our debts, they tried to collect a debt that had met the Statute of Limitations in my state (TX) which is four years and makes this debt uncollectable.

    The Cease and Desist letter is of the utmost importance.

    I received al "Garnishment Release" letter from this group.  First of all, my wages have not been garnished, second, I nor my employer have received any correspondence concerning any type of judgement or legal action against me. and I haven't been in BAD debt for over 10 years.  So, what exactly are they releasing me from?  This is so weird.  I do remember recieving something about 7 years(or maybe evenmore) years ago from this firm, so the statute of any type of debt has been met.  This is so weird.  I am having all court papers(concerning this case number) pulled to see exactly what is going on.

    These calls are from a law firm (Blatt, Hassenmiller, Liebskier) that say they represent collection companies such as Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC and the Bureau's.  They continously call me about a debt that I went to court for with them and the judge dismissed the entire case because the debt was settled 5 yrs ago. 2 yrs after court they are still attempting to collect on a debt that was paid, that is ILLEGAL AND FRAUD :)
