The company is Porter and Martin. I got a call from someone with caller ID blocked to call 1-866-299-8558 to prevent a court summons. That person did not know who-what-whys,nor that it was an attempted to collect a debt, but for me to call that number immediately and avoid a lawsuit.  I called that number and talked to a Mr Levee on July 10, 2009. I don't know his function either, but he said that he the authority to make a payment plan on a 6-year old credit card debt that has more than doubled with accrued interest ($5,800 ). Mr. Levee told me he could work with me as my "Friend" or my "enemy". I only have $165 left over for food and gas from my Social Security check. I cannot make payment arrangements nor can I ask relatives to "loan" me the money as he had suggested.

So I told them to procede. Porter and Martin could have gotten my information from those background check company and are out to make some money.

I am an old Viet Nam veteran who can't keep a job, low self-esteem, no insurance or final expense money to my name. What can they possibly do or take from me?

Yes, I got a call from these creeps in July 2009. They were trying to collect a 6-year-old debt. I told them that I know my rights under the Fair Debt Collection Act and that the statute of limitations has run out on the debt. They hung up!!!!

My Wife got a call from her mother today. Porter & Martin had called about a 6+ year old debt talking about a warrant for my wifes arrest. Since I am military I am a bit weary of these things. I talked to my wife who was in tears and talking about being arrested. They wanted 1/2 the debt settled today July 15th by Close of business and told her to find someone who would loan her the money. I asked a lot of questions about them and did some research. Porter & Martin is a supposed "Law Firm" working for Paystar International LLC. My wife had Porter & Martin email me the settlement information to my military email so that document became Government property. I'll keep you updated on the judgment of the military legal system.

    Confused
ArmyGuy, please let us know how it goes. We received a phone call today. Neither my fiance nor I have been enlisted in the military at any point in our lives, and the people on the phone are pretty suspicious.

A lady from Nationwide Processing/United Processing asking for a Vanessa, then asked for my fiance. Neither of us know who Vanessa is and why that person would be filing a complaint against him.

They directed us to this number with Porter and Martin, and when we asked the lady on the phone her direct line, she did not know. I dont like how this sounds, and I am quite weary that this is a scam.

    Whatever you do...DON'T PAY!
    This is a scam.

They are a collection agency that buys debts that have been written off. I ended up on their list because I was listed as a relative by someone I haven't spoken to in 9 years. I'm not even a relative.

BUT...as a result, these people have been calling me for over a year using different names and phone numbers.

Names the company have used within the last two weeks are: Porter and Martin, 866-299-8558 & Weber and Stevens, 866-755-1060.

Both calls were from the same person.

This company cannot have anyone thrown in jail. They won't sue. They are NOT calling about a legal matter. NOBODY is going to sue you if you don't pay the debt they are calling about.

If you have a debt you want to pay, deal with your original creditor.

This is not a company that can get the debt off of your credit record. They are scammers who prey on the gullible.

I've been saving the messages on my answering machine, keeping notes & doing research since they left me their first message.

I've got nothing to lose since they are looking for someone I haven't spoken to in years. BUT, I don't want the people who need their money the most being scared into getting further in debt by falling for these scammers. I don't even want people who are already stressed to be further stressed by calls like this either.

Army Guy, please, don't you or your wife worry. I think you've already given these scammers more than they deserve just by talking to them. Tell your wife not to fret. They can't do any of the things they have threatened.

I've been tracking these people for awhile. Scammers! Don't pay!

My mother in law got a call today for me asking for a married name I have not used in 15 years since a divorce!!  They told her she was the only known contact for me.  She just took the message, and gave it to me.  I am so glad I googled the number first.  I won't even waste my time calling them back.  There should be laws against this type of family harrassment!  This company should be put out of business! They told her it was a serious matter filed in county court that had to be settled by 5pm today, but never said what county.  She was shocked that anyone would even connect my former name with her.

This person called both my husband and myself on our cell phones! Unknown number. When my husband called, they told him he was being sued...then told him they had two people with his name and asked if he lived in another city. Then he asked him if his last four digits of his social security was ....? It was not, so the person on the phone told him they must have the wrong person. DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER! THIS IS A SCAM!!!

They called my sister in law (could've been about my husband).  No idea what this is about.  It has got to be illegal to call anyone but a spouse, right?

Susan Carter, Lisa Jackson, Lisa Weber...this person goes by many names. She isn't an attorney.

The firm who goes by the names of Steven & Weber or Porter & Martin (there may be more names, I guess they make them up as needed) is not a law firm.

They don't exactly SAY they are a law firm. They just do a lot of implying by using words like "complaint" and "legal matter" in their messages. They are trying to scare you. They want you to think somebody is coming after you.It will never happen.

NOTHING is going to happen to you or anybody else if you don't respond.

    NEVER, EVER, EVER identify yourself.

They are going to say things like "Susan?" trying to establish Susan as owning that phone number for future reference. Identifying yourself is the kiss of death. These semi-legit companies buy debts that legitimate collection agencies have written off as impossible to collect. Give anybody your name at a particular number and you will be called until the end of your days.

Porter and Martin aren't going to sue you. Nobody is going to sue you over the money this company is calling you about. Your debt has been deemed uncollectible. That is why a company like this has it.

This post is my opinion only and is not legal advice. Although I think if you DO contact an attorney he'll tell you the same thing I just did.

Save the messages. replies to LL
    Hi.

Save the messages they leave on your answering machine. Start a list of all the times and dates you get calls from PRIVATE.

Technically, if you are on a "do not call" list, you are not supposed to get calls from anyone YOU don't do business with. But, Porter & Martin, Weber & Stevens or whatever name you were given may be staying within the legal line if your relative gave you as a reference when she signed paperwork to secure her debt.

Companies like this one stay technically legal buy using words like "complaint filed", "case number" and "legal matter" to IMPLY they are lawyers. But, listen closely, they don't come right out and say THEY are lawyers.

Don't you or your relative talk to anybody like this without recording the conversation. Be sure to inform them before saying a word or identifying yourself that the conversation is being recorded.

IF or anyone is threatened with being arrested, being "picked up", if the conversation becomes abusive or if the number of calls become so numerous they disrupt your life, turn over every recording and your list of times and dates to your state's Attorney General.

This is my opinion, based on my research and not legal advise.

They f**ked with the wrong guy this time. I've done my research and have come to find that they are nothing but liars and theives. I work for the phone company you know VERIZON, and have a pretty important position with my company. The phone number traces back to a 395 North Service Road in Melville, NY 11747. I took it a step further and found out that there is a Katz Law Firm there in the building however, the office directly next door to them claim they are a financial office but long behold suite 410 is in fact "Porter & Martin", "Webber and Stevens", and "Paystar International" and what I've now discovered based on phone records "United Abstract Group". The owners are Barry Calvagna of the Gotti Crime family yes the MOB and Anthony Piccone. Your wondering how I know this, well first I have taped all phone conversations on United Abstract in addition to a little help from a man named Bud Hibbs. WWW.BUDHIBBS.COM, he will do wonders for you people. Continuing onward here; If you dial this number 1-866-299-8558 you get the same lady who also answers as UNITED on 631-421-1307 who will give you this whole explaniation that they just answer the phones for many companies, there are possibly one or 2 more people who answer these phones one is definatley a drag queen or 50 y/o woman who sounds like she/he smoked 100 packs of cigarettes or is sick, the other one sounds like a Brooklyn/Long Island [***]. PLEASE DON'T PAY THESE PEOPLE, send them letters and file a class action lawsuit. Tell Barry Calvagna that he and his 50 so called Mafia coworkers won't be receiving any of your hard earned money. Report them to the FBI or Attorney Generals Office. The FBI told me that they need at least 20-30 complaints before they investigate and so far they have about 16, do not hesitate to have your family and realtives anyone contact the FBI and local state government of New York till someone shuts them down. If you have questions post here, I'll respond I plan to stay on top of them for the next # change or name change.

Porter and Martin left a message on my phone Friday afternoon; I searched and found this site; Oh what a relief.

They ask for money for an old account over 7 years old.
I told them I will contact authorities on them.

Is there a number or a person in FBI that I can contact regarding these people?
