Called 3 times today and left messages with last 4 digits of SS# saying they are from the tax fraud dept. of the IRS.  Heavy Caribbean accent, could barely understand what they were saying, but said we would be arrested if we did not return the call!   Seriously?   I don't think so!!!!

This is someone who is impersonating as a caller from IRS. They have very difficult to understand accent and threaten you with lien, criminal case and other dire consequences. Just be Aware that IRS never does any solicited calls and will always communicate with you on your mailing address. Please call your near IRS location if in doubt.

    .... A smart individual

Received the same call.  The first call was on 866-338-9056.  A few days later, the caller ID was 800-829-1040, which is the official IRS line.  Not sure how they were able to fool caller ID.  They had a bit of personal data ie. previous residence, last 4 digits of my SS, etc which I'm not happy about.  The guy was threatening liens and asking for the name of my lawyer.  When I called back on the official line, turns out that the guy doesn't exist.  I thought the accent was heavy Indian.    I'm guessing that they have banks of people who handle the initial call and confirm that they've reached who they need to, and then the call get moved to the "manager", someone who has better English or has the hard pitch.  He almost got me with the hook - It's not really my job, but I'm trying to help you.

my experience is very similar as other stories listed guy called 3 times from IRS number well at least that was the number on my caller id 1 800 829 1040  and left me  voice mail that he has a legal petition against my social security number last 4 digits and that he is from IRS internal revenue service with a very very heavy Indian accent could barely understand him. After calling back the number he left the person who answered the phone asked my name and phone that they called & said I will put you through with an IRS officer by the way every one there has heavy indian accents. once the guy answered he  said I owed $2900.00 in miss calculated taxes that I intentionally did so he said and said I could pay $500.00 today to clear it from going to federal court or pay $12000.00 in court expenses this is after he read me  abunch of legal disclosures so he claims for over 15 mins on the phone while I could barely understand and I disagreed and I asked if he could tell me my filing status for the years he claims he claims I owe he said from 2008-2012 he said he did not have that info he had an old address of mine from 4 yrs ago which is why I didn't buy any of it for a min. irs has all my current info did I mention he had my full ss# thats the scary part I call irs directly and they stated its a scam so please be aware of this do not give any info go to irs.gov and report all fraud info I believe he got my info from a credit app online and credit reports etc.

A lil' insight to my background so as to make it more clear and with an intent to help. I'm originally from India and have lived here in the US for a decade now and work and live here legally and pay more than my share of taxes. Prior to comin' here I've worked in a call center for 3 years when I used to live there and in various different projects and positions and am aware of the entire process on how this works. So have seen the best of both worlds. In th first 6 minutes of my first call I felt relieved and was sure it was just a scam. I'll explain this better.

I made numerous calls to this no(866-338-9056) and spoke to different people and now they all recognize my voice and hang up, and one guy even told me they don't need my money.

Step 1 : To ascertain the authenticity I kept them engaged for longer period of time to make sure what is the entire process and i found a lot of things like they are all scripted in the sense they all read the same things over and over.
Step 2 : These guys are smart but not smart enough to outsmart me as I paid attention to the verbage used, common grammatical errors and sentence formation and vocabulary that's not used by Americans and asked 'em questions when they fumbled for answers and they goofed up or stammered. :p
Step 3 : Initially I posed as a Federal Agent/IRS internal Intelligence wing officer etc on different calls with different people and Tried to scare the [***] outta 'em as I said we were from the intelligence wing and are tracing this call and the feds will be @ you location and that they will be tried in a US court and will be facin' federal charges as this is a Felony and even read the Miranda rights to make it sound more authentic and threatnin' 'em of dire consequences tryin' to malign a federal agency after which my subsequent calls were not answered with the "Internal audit of IRS" msg and that made it clear they were a bit shook up after my multiple call backs.
Step 4 : I went till the last step of 'em asking me for $500 and that i go to either a radioshack, riteaide etc and to pay using a service like a pay bank/card (Cannot remember but I presumed it is might be something like a prepaid card that you load with the designated amount of $$ and then pass the info to these [***]) and i had my wife act as the person over the counter from Radio shack and she gave 'em the run around a bit and they got upset with her and said she was playing and wasting their time and then got upset with me.
Step 5 : AFter a few more times they said i was wasting valuable IRS time and that I will get penalized and go to jail for that as well and then like I mentioned they started to hang up as soon as they heard my voice.

My observations and Points to ponder  :
    ---------------------------------------------------
IRS will never use any third party agencies to do any kinda work especially if it's sensitive and even if they do it will never be outsourced to different country. If they have a problem with your filing they will contact you directly with physical snail mail before contacting you on your phone and if in doubt just go to your local IRS office and confirm it or call and confirm and while you are there please resport this no and state what happened in the call and what their demands are. Another thing very vital to notice is that they would not threaten of arrest/criminal charges unless you are audited/tried and proven of tax/money laundering which anyways you would be aware as they would contact you first to Audit you. Lastly they would never tell you we do not accept money from a check, bank checking account, debit/ credit card or any form of payment which can be tracking electronically here in the US of A and ask you to pay with money gram, western union or any such prepaid card services. Also

    Deduction :
    -----------

These people might've got your information from some marketing agency and wanna make some money off you and call you and harass you as they know Americans are very paranoid/skeptical when it comes to sensitive date and assume they can take people for a ride.

    Solution :
    -----------

Please do not reveal/give 'em anymore of your personal information than they already have and just act like you don't care or if you are the fun loving types do what I did. You can ignore their calls or ask 'em to take your off thier calling list or put on do not call list (I didn't as I intend to call 'em more and have a lil' bit of fun ;) ...

Hope this post helps as I've tried to be as explicit as possible and am just trying to create awareness and hope the person reading does that to help others who have been getting this harassing phone calls.

    Another Updated # 202-241-0280.

They again called me from the above mentioned new # and as soon as they asked me my phone # (As they go back to their records/database to get the name that's associated with that #) and i provided it and they confirmed the name and then they hung up and after which they won't answer the phone. I tried calling back and it was a magicjack phone(IP phone) so not a legal landline from the US as they can be used from anywhere in the globe and I've used one for the last 5 yrs myself outside of the US(Just an update).
