RECEIVED A CALL FROM THIS  NUMBER SAYING THEY WERE CHECKING ON MY APPLICATION FOR AN AMERICAN EXPRESS CARD.  I TOLD THEM I HADN'T APPLIED FOR AN AMERICAN EXPRESS CARD AND THEY TOLD ME THAT I MUST BE A VICTIM OF IDENTITY THEFT AND I'D BETTER CONTACT THE CREDIT BUREAU.  THEY ALSO WANTED TO CHECK SOME OF THE INFO ON THE APPLICATION TO SEE IF THEY WERE CORRECT.  I CALLED THE NUMBER THEY GAVE ME FOR THE CREDIT BUREAU AND THEY HAD NO IDEA WHY I HAD THAT PHONE NUMBER.  IT WAS A CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS.

Keep receiving calls from people with Indian? accents from (866)379-3643.  I don't answer so they leave messages saying they are calling about my recent application (I never submitted an AMEX application)I called the number from a phone other than my cell and selected option #1 It then asked me to enter my SSN (which I would never enter) and so I pressed zero.  It said it didn't understand my entry and asked me to reenter, I pressed zero again and it said to hold on while they connect me to a customer service agent.  I was then disconnected.  Did a search on the net and found this website.

The same thing has happened to me with this return number. i contacted american express and they looked up this number and stated that this 866-379-3643 number is not their number!!! when i tried to call them back at this number, you can never really get anybody on the line. you go in circles with the touchtone system etc. it's a total fraud.

Looks like a phishing attack (i.e. attempt to gather personal information for future fraud).

Just received a similar call this morning.

Do not provide SSN# or other personal details.

In general, whenever I receive suspicious calls, I track down the published, reputable customer service number of the actual company in question rather than the number provided in the voice-mail.  It adds a bit of time but you insure you are speaking to the right people.

Hello Folks-  PAY ATTENTION!!!!  THIS NUMBER APPEARS TO BE REAL.

I wanted to apologize and correct my last post.

I called American Express directly (i.e. their main customer service number) and they confirmed it IS ACTUALLY one of the numbers for their New Card Division.

I did get disconnected at least once and I got transfered a bunch so I can understand why people felt it might be fake.  I also talked with at least one foreign-accented fellow...NO SURPRISE since Amex OUTSOURCES a bunch of their call-center responsibilities internationally.

Here is what I found out:

    1) They NEED your SSN because otherwise they cannot identify you.  Without identification they cannot check to see what -if any- accounts have been opened in your name.  What a completely *F*cKed*** system!  But that is the way it is...without a SSN they can only pull up a list of everyone with your name...and that is a LONG list.

    2) They are calling you to WARN you of suspicious account activity.  DON'T IGNORE THEIR CALLS!  They are trying to help you.  If you are concerned or don't believe me/this post, fine.  Go ahead and call Amex's main number and work through these problems with them directly.  No skin off my back.

Have received three messages from someone saying they are from American Express and want to check on my new application.  However, I have not submitted a new application.  After the third message, called American Express directly (number on my card).  The representative said that she had no record of that number in her system as being used by American Express.  Upon review of my account, she said that no applications had been submitted in my name.  She put comments on the Am Ex system in case an application was put in that I called about this.  Be careful, seems like this is a fraud (despite people writing below that it is a legitimate number).  Call a known, secure American Express number to check your account rather then that 866-379-3643 number from the message.

602-766-6484 shows up on the caller ID and the caller leaves a number 1-866-379-3643 to call back.  It seems to be legit.  But if you want to still be cautious and you did request a new account with AMEX then go to their website and check you application status there.  After you check your application status online, it will give you a number to call back if you have further questions.

Got a call this morning from some woman who spoke very broken (Indian) English.  She seemed to be saying something about my application for a credit card.  Rather than call this number that she gave, I phone AMEX's customer serivce number.  Initially they didn't show any activity, but then I was connected with the 'new accounts' dept and they indeed did have an application in process - I hadn't applied for anything!!!  The rep. said they would cancel this appl. process and suggested I contact any of the credit reporting bureaus (I called TransUnion) and place a consumer/fraud alert with them. So it appears this 866# is legit, as there was an application on file in my name, even thought I didn't apply for anything.  I wouldn't suggest you ignore it - call and see what's up!!!

This is a valid number.  I did apply for an Amex card, I have fraud alerts on file with all 3 credit bureaus, so I was unable to get the card immediately upon application - Amex needed a call to/from my home phone number to confirm it was me that wanted the card.  The system is working!!  The callerid showed 602-766-6484 but they had me call 1-866-379-3643 back to confirm my application.  I first called the number on the Amex website but got cut off - when I called the 866 number it took me into the same voice tree system but this time I didn't get cut off...I spoke to an American named Larry.

    Think about it
This is not a real number, try yourself, call it then enter any old ssn, make one up. They will tell you that you about the status of your card. Any old number will work, ssn number can be made up on the fly and are useless without a name. 232 54 4432 There, probably not even a real number. If everyone called these people with bogus info, maybe they would be losing time and money.

I am a amex card holder, got the call it is not real. Amex never asked for your ssn when you open a new card. I have 3 amex cards and know the process quite well. BEWARE! They will get your number I do not know how, then even had my cell which I never give to anyone. There are only two people I know that have all 3 numbers that they called.

I got a voicemail message from a woman with an Indian accent, asking me to return the call.  After listening about 7 times, I understood it to be American Express, and when I called back, it sounded like AmEx.  However, since I was frustrated replaying the message again and again to try to get the number, I googled the possible numbers and read this posting, at which point I hung up and called the main number for AMEX.  The customer service representative confirmed that this is NOT one of their numbers.

American Express employs more than 70,000 people world wide. In addition, the "Customer Service" department acts as more of a operator switchboard, except when explaining general benefits or billing. If I want to use my membership rewards points, I get transfered. If I want to apply for a new card, I get transfered. If I want to check on the status of an application, I get transfered. It cost thousands of dollars to set up an Interactive Voice Response system. If this is a scam, then my name is Susan. (I'm a man, and I only know of one Boy named Sue.)

This number is for a department that is deddicated to fighting fraud. Doesn't it make sense that they would not want a scammer to know the processes that they use to find said scammer? American Express out sources to India, as well as Salt lake City, and Phoenix. I strongly recommend you either answer the call, or return the call. These nice people are trying to protect you, and too often instead of understanding that they are like the Narcotics cops and have to be descreit you lash out at them.

It makes my day when I bust a fraud ring. There is nothing more frustrating than the total lack of appreciation when I stop someone from ruining your life. If you could actually understand how little a company like Lifelock can do to help you, or how easy it is for a professional fraudster (they do exist and all credit card companies spend hundreds of millions to stay ahead of them) to gather your "sensitive" information, you would truly appreciate when a company like American Express steps beyond it's duty to protect itself.

This is a definite scam!  The Indian accented "American Express" person had a beeping noise in the background which was supposed to be [and may have been] recording the conversation.  This recording was not mention when he initially called, as all legitimate companies would do.  He was calling looking for my daughter, who has not lived with us in 13 YEARS!  Supposedly she had contacted American Express and made a request, and he was calling her back in response to her "request".  Of course, when I asked if she gave my number as the call back number he stated he could not disclose any information regarding her account.  And, I happen to know that my daughter despises AMEX and would never go to them for an account.

Don't be fooled by the person who claims to work for AMEX and know this number is legitimate.  Has anyone ever worked for a company as large as AMEX and known all of the 800 numbers associated with that company?  Think about it... don't fall for this crap!
