    It is Southland Acquisitions.  They say they have a court summons on me.  They tried getting personal info, I refused.  They are not BBB accredited.  Sounds like a scam.

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
    Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

    Just got a call from them today, saying "Please listen very carefully, this is Matt Anderson, I am calling on behalf of a process service verification. I am calling to notify _______ that there is a complaint filed in our office. We want to make sure you are aware of the situation before the documents on this file are finalized. For any further questions or any further assistance you will need to contact our corporate law office at 866-400-4595 and you will need to reference case # ________- _______ . This has been marked for red flag I do advise you calling immediately." When I called the number it was a collection agency called "Southland Acquisitions". When asked I was told their address was 112 Harvard #68 Claremont, CA 91711. They told me I had a court case against me and have 30 days to pay, if I don't they will garnish my wages and said the name of the company I work for. About 1 month ago they called my parents, cell and home phone. I asked them send me documentation and they said I first have to agree to pay them and would send me an email with the info, sign it and fax back the signed documents. They want me to pay them money and gave me info from my credit reports, which I had in front of me, when I looked them up, Southland does not show on the reports, cannot find them anywhere, not with the BBB, Hoover or anyone....nothing. I am calling the Consumer Protection in my state and California. I don't know if they are legit or not.

    Uuhh, did you not see Alfalfa's boilerplate up there? There should be several FDCPA violations described in your brief story. Probably more if you do the homework.

    Got a call from Southland Acquisitions for the wrong number. I called back to let them know and he attempted to get my personal information but would not give out his company information. When I asked to speak to a supervisor he hung up.

    They said they were Steven or Jim Taylor calling for Shawna Emler and gave a case number.

    P Hatf -

    I just got an exact call like what you described today (Jan 23, 2012). The caller ID on my cell phone came up as UNKNOWN. The call I got was from a Matthew Anderson and his message was for my boyfriend. How this person ever got my phone # is a mystery to me. The message almost sounded the exact same as what you wrote although the phone # he left was different (877-702-2041). This person also gave me a case # too. The person also said that he would put a one hour hold on any action they would take and my boyfriend needed to call immediately. When my boyfriend called them I couldn't hear what the person he was talking to said, but from hearing his side of the conversation it sounded the same as what you described. Can you tell me what the Consumer Protection people said and whether you got any resolution to the matter that might help us out. Thank you.

    Also just got a call from unknown, message identified himself as David Taylor and that I needed to call 877 702 2041. They were looking for someone who is not me, and as I have had this happen from legitimate collectors in the past, I called to set them straight.  An automated voice informed me that i had called Southland Acquisitions and to hold for an available agent. I told them that they had a wrong number. He asked for my name, I told him I would not give him my name. He told me if I did not give him my name I would continue to receive phone calls.  I had not heard this level of bs in the past and started to ask him why he would need my name in order to stop calling. He interrupted me to tell me to have a nice day and hung up. Plenty of phish in the sea for these guys I guess.

    My husband called me at work to ask me to skip trace # 800-949-1451 that someone had called his cousin in another state, his mother, aunt uncle asking if they could send some legal paperwork to there house.  The number was not found anywhere so, I called the number first of all can you say rude to the thrity third power....I immediately asked for a supervisor and was told if I had a case number I gave them the number and the name Odell Davis which is not my husband name.  They told me that they have court documents along with a summons but wouldnt give me any other information I informed them that I would report them to the Attoney General in Illinois and they hung the phone up on me...
    As a Collections Manager business to business I know they have broken at least 6 FDCPA REGULATIONS...THIS IS A SCAM BEWARE!!!!

I went and had my information changed. These [***] have me pissed off. Someone need to lock all they butt up. They had a guy to call me first and act like he was a sheriff and they were going to summon me to court. He gave me a 1-888-261-0093 number to call and I did. The guy stated he was Ed Thexlery and he got my information. So please be on the lookout for this Southland Company. They will scare you. They will have to take me to court because I am not giving them any money.
