I got a letter in the mail with this number - it's for a Federal Mortgage Program

No, it's not a "Federal Mortgage Program".  It's a scam.  They are getting your mortgage information off of recorded documents and then soliciting you.  If you read their letter closely they don't commit to anything...just a lot of "what if's".  Don't call them or respond.  If you want to know more about refinancing or government programs, contact a reputable bank or mortgage lender

Martin replied, "Don't call them or respond."  Oh, quite the contrary.  It's a toll-free number, meaning that they pay for the call.  Call them, every minute you get.  Waste their time.  Ask about rug cleaning, auto insurance, mail-order steaks. Spend their money and irritate them.  Put your feet up while watching the game and call them again and again.  Ask them what the betting line is.  Ask if their refrigerator is running.  Ask if they have seen Obama's birth certificate.  Ask if they can see Russia from their porch.

If they manage to ask you about your mortgage, just say, "Oh, I don't have a mortgage, I live in my car.  Have you seen the new Lady Gaga video?"

I am very happy they wrote to tell me about this opportunity to refinance. My old lender was happy taking my money without telling me about this opportunity to save. I am happy I called them;they refinanced my home with terrific terms and I am saving a lot of money.
