- Terri P| 1 replyHave been calling me and leaving messages on my cell phone (which they should not have) about a supposed debt of my father's (they have his birthdate) who is deceased. They wanted a copy of death certificate etc... When I said it is not my debt, and the county where his death certificate is filed, I said that is the only information which I will give them. I told them to stop calling my number as it is not my debt and they said they will not. They will continue to call me until it is 'resolved'. I told them they had no legal right to harass me for a debt that is not mine. He said that if I would give them more info they wouldn't have to. Not acceptable. I told them I would not answer or return any calls from them.

Not quite true.
In many cases, debt can be "inherited".
However, you should read more abot the FDCPA to learn about the exceptions, and the process that collection companies MUST follow, to remain within the law.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:
* Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money. ["Written" means snailmailed ... not emailed or texted]

If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:
