- ANONThey are calling to say that there is a criminal proceeding. They want you to verify the last 4 of your social and when and if you choose not to they get angry and tell you to wait for the the paperwork of your case to come in the mail and they hang up the phone.

- ANONMISSSame deal as prior writer..I had a call on my cell from "UNKNOWN"..Andrea left a message with phone number and case #. Called back and they were working a criminal proceeding from a hospital bill. Turns out it is a local hospital that I have never been to..so I could not have a delinquent bill when I was NEVER there for any treatment! They wanted almost $2000 today so I would not be served. Wanted me to verify last 4 of SS# (which they did know) and told me my home address (which they also did know). When I told them I would have my attorney call them they said "good luck with that" and hung up. I called the local Sheriff's office and filed a report..and also called credit bureaus and put a freeze on anyone trying to open a new credit card account. Amazing!

- HeatherI was called from this number but the call was for my ex sister in law. They said they are calling from Process service dispatch and were calling to notify an attempt will be made at the last known address or employer to issue a notice of action or complaint. This isn't and never has been her number so I'm not sure how or why they have it. A case number was left along with the call back number i'm inquiring about.

- me tooI received a call from this number, first, asking if I have covid and that they are trying to serve me papers because someone is suing me. I took the number and file number and called them. They asked me for my information. I told them if they are suing me, they should have all of my information and then hung up.

- BigAThe fake process server/location finder extortion attempt usually consists of the following:
They mention that they have received a Fax document or some sort of complaint and that there is a pending legal matter or action about to filed against you to create the sense of urgency. They tell you that they are a “process server” and cannot give you the particulars of the case since the file is sealed. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number (often with a made-up case number) where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer). They threaten to serve you at home or at work. They tell you that if they serve you at work then they will need a supervisor, security, or HR person there as a witness, hoping that will cause you to panic over the alleged embarrassment of being served at work. They also tell you that you will need two forms of ID. None of which is true. Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them. Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else. They certainly are not going to pass up a paycheck by telling you that you can avoid being served, they are not going to give you an extra day or even a few hours to get a “stop order”. Court documents are time sensitive and must be served within a certain amount of time. Remember that you can always call the local courthouse to see if there really is a lawsuit that has been filed against you.
It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it. You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified. If and when you get that letter you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.
First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file complaints with the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

- LalaJust received call from "Unknown Number". Same story as above, said there were legal proceedings against me. I knew this could not be true but waited to hear what he was going to say. He said he was a process server and told me to call 866-585-0231 for "more information". He could not pronounce the name of my county. Process servers do not call first and they are local, so would know how to pronounce the county. Obviously a scam.

- KathyCalled claiming to be process server. Looking for my daughter. Would not disclose any information only that it was a complaint served in Hidalgo County. They call everyday on both home and cell phone and leave messages except for today and actually talked to a person. This is a scam and they don't give up.

- LindaSame kind of call gives a call back number 866-585-3119. They added a name on the end of my name, mentioned a street close to, but not my street name, and a county in another state. I called back the first time and was told they are a Legal Office in California. This is a scam, and even if you don't know the procedures exactly, legal issues are not initiated by a phone call - nor are they resolved by a call. Tell them to deliver the documents.
