They called me and told me they were from The Wayne County process servers office, no such thing. I hung up they called 4 more times. Then they called my daughter, we have no idea how the got her number, and left a voicemail with all of my info stating they were coming out to my house. Then I called the number and the answered weird then when I questioned them they said they were a law firm so I asked where and the name of it and the nasty girl put me on hold

They called early in the morning and claimed they were trying to serve me papers. So I said, “serve them.” But they were more interested in obtaining information from me. This is for sure a scam. There is no lawsuit filed anywhere against me. I thought maybe it was a witness subpoena, but they would not give me any information whatsoever. It was obvious that they were trying to collect information. Total scammers. Oh, and the lady who answers the phone, yikes, she sounds like one of the most unhappy humans on the planet. If somebody can get her name, that would be great. But ya Scam Likely.

Whoever runs this scam needs to be locked up for a long time. I didnt answer, so they left a message saying that they are a law firm working for my county of residence, and that "for obvious reasons" they tried to serve me papers at my residence, and at my employer (which is funny because i am unemployed and before that I worked from home) and that no one was there to sign for them. That is... not how process serving works at all. Then, this number called my mom, my partner, and my brother, telling them all that I owe a debt and it's about to be heard before a judge with or without my input. Its very clear that they are simply using one of those cheap online "look up people who might be associated with this person" sites to harass me and try to scare me into dealing with them. This is beyond harassment and if anyone happens to find out who they are, i would love to cause as much legal trouble for them as i can

Left a message on my phone as well as my husband using my Maiden name stating they were from a county courthouse I used to live in over 10 years ago trying to serve me papers. They left a different number to call back on. They proceeded to call my brother in law as well. First off, that’s not how process servers work. Second, we contacted the courthouse they claimed to be from and there is no case under any legal name or drivers license number nor has there ever been. This is a scam. If they call again I will advise them I am taking legal action against their company.

How can you take legal action if you don't know who or where they are?

Caller claimed to be a process server from our county of residence looking for my daughter and stated we needed to respond ASAP as they would be serving papers at our home w/i two days (this was left in a vmail). My son received a similar vmail regarding his sister. Both callers spoke in such a heavy accent it was difficult to understand them. Glad everyone is posting about their experience with these scammers as they just confirmed my suspicions.

One of the tricks they use is to call your family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them so that they can scare that person into paying extortion money.  They will usually also state information that would be illegal for a real debt collector to state to department and tell them that you are a deadbeat who does not pay their bills. They often call people that have never even been a third party such as that you are being sued, that you owe money to someone, etc. They threaten that if you do not call them back, they will contact your HR associated with you because they get erroneous information off the internet.

The fake process server/location finder extortion SCAM usually consists of the following:

They mention that they have received a Fax document or some sort of complaint and that there is a pending legal matter or action about to filed against you to create the sense of urgency. They tell you that they are a “process server” and cannot give you the particulars of the case since the file is sealed. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number (often with a made-up case number) where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer). They threaten to serve you at home or at work. They tell you that if they serve you at work then they will need a supervisor, security, or HR person there as a witness, hoping that will cause you to panic over the alleged embarrassment of being served at work. They also tell you that you will need two forms of ID. None of which is true. Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them. Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else. They certainly are not going to pass up a paycheck by telling you that you can avoid being served, they are not going to give you an extra day or even a few hours to get a “stop order”. Court documents are time sensitive and must be served within a certain amount of time. Remember that you can always call the local courthouse to see if there really is a lawsuit that has been filed against you.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it. You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter, email, or text (postmarked in the case of a letter) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. Unless they have communicated it to you verbally at the beginning of your conversation. It also must contain the “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this communication must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified. If and when you get that communication you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

You can also file a complaint with the FTC who will then direct you to the CFPB.  Or you can simply go to the the FTC website and file a complaint which will again be redirected to the CFPB.  No matter what you are going to end up reporting the complaint to the CFPB so why not go there first and forget about the FTC?  I mean seriously, you are not actually going to report anything about debt collection directly to the FTC but hey, knock yourself out!  https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/assistant

You should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Had someone call me from 866-585-1405.  Person kept on asking "is this <name>?"  Since I have a fairly common name, I said, "Speaking."  So they asked again, and then again, obviously trying to get me to say "yes."  After the third time I demanded to know who they were.  They told me they were a process server and that they'd be sending a sheriff to my home on Friday to deliver papers.  Then they started in with "Do you want me to give you a phone number and a case number to call?"  Obviously again an attempt to push me into giving a "yes" answer.  I demanded again to know who they were calling for and they gave me the same "I'm a process server" spiel and then rattled off the last four digits of a SSN.  The SSN didn't match mine and I told them so.  They then rattled off a address that's not mine.  I told them that they had the wrong person, and he started repeatedly demanding "do you want me to give you this phone number and your case info?"  I demanded to know which county he was calling from.  He gave me some odd county I had never heard of, and the zip code he gave was in Arizona, nowhere close to where I live.  I told him that he had the wrong address, and he started shouting that "Do you want me to send the cops to your place?"  I hung up on him.  He called back immediately and started being abusive.  I told him that he had the wrong person, and not to call me back again.  Not sure why he was pushing so hard with the 'yes/no' questions.
