Caller stated they were from American Express and needed our account number to apply a check written by my husband.  We do not have an AmEx account, nor do we bank where the check was written.  It sounded like a scam, but they gave me a number to call back.  The recording said it was American Express billing and to hold for a representative.  It just kept ringing and ringing.

    Not fooled
I had the same thing happen as reported by the others above.  I came into the office this morning and had a voicemail from someone claiming to be from AmEx.  They said they needed additional info from me to cash a check from Capital One.  I knew the claim was false because I don't have any banking business with Capital One and AmEx does not have my office number on file.  I googled the telephone number and found this site.  Beware-- do not give your account information to these people.

Seems legit.  I had a lot of suspicions, especially after reading this post.  However, when I called the American Express # on the back of our credit card and spoke with a rep, they verified the number is with one of their departments.  If it's a fraud, it's a good one.

Definitely fraud. Just received a call on my cell from this number wanting to verify my wife as a payer on her mother's account. Pushy caller identified herself as Jackie Brown and wanted info real credit card companies never ask for. Also, why would they call my cell when I'm not even identified on her mother's account? Called real American Express and they verified this phone number is not associated with them.

Wow...stop being so paranoid. simply call the number on the back of your card, ask for Billing and Payment Services, then provide the representative with the reference number...which by the way is simply the check number in question.

You do not neccessarily have to have an American Express Account to pay on one.
Think about it: you and your BFF go to the mall, your BFF has a AMEX card but you still need to "go by the ATM". Your BFF says: "Don't worry about it... I will charge everything and you just pay me later".
Later...you give BFF a check and instead of cashing or depositing the check, your BFF simply endorses the check then presents it to AMEX for payment.

    THINK PEOPLE>>>>PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even those that speak with an accent need gainful employment....do you believe that only Americans born and raised here are employed by American Express....a GLOBAL Conglomerate?

    Hey lordinpa,
it may be that "they" never heard of the specific person...Jackie Brown, But "they" surely would have heard of Billing and Payment Services and thats who you should ask for. In a company as large and diverse as American Express , it is very possible that the "they" that you speak of may not know every employee across the globe.

This is in fact a valid number, feel free to call the number on the back of your card and ask them to verify the number that is calling you, they will be able to verify the number for you. This is a dept that works to make sure that the payment you sent is applied to the correct account, incase amounts are different or the account number/amount is not clearly legible.

I have to second some of the advise stated above.

I know it's wise to be careful now-a-days. I get that. But the phone number 866-585-6822 is indeed the number for the American Express Billing and Payment Center in South Florida. It is not a scam.

Remember, you don't have to have a current Amex account to get this type of call.  The representative might have received a check without enough information (no stub, no clear account number, a counter check, check was damaged by USPS, etc...) and they don't know how to apply the payment.  They're simply trying to pay someone's Amex Card balance and rather than cause someone's account to go past-due (which would happen if they just sent the check back to the bank), they want to do what they can to apply the payment.

Remember, you might have (or once had) a personal or business relationship with Amex, or you wrote a check to someone else, and that person simply signed the check over to Amex to pay THEIR (not your) Amex card bill.  You might also be an additional card holder on someone else's business or personal account (now or at one time in the past)

Even the representative's that call from that number will say that if you don't feel comfortable giving them info, call the number on the back of your Card (or call Amex general customer service.)   Also, most (*but not all) unapplied payments are noted on the account.

Just to respond, this is not a scam.  See my response that was posted on 11.08.11.  The number 866-585-6822 belongs to the Amex Billing and Payment Center in South Florida.  Not all reps at the main service center offices are familiar with the Billing phone team. The phone team was set up so that Amex can more efficiently apply payments when checks come in damaged, torn, wet, missing payment stubs, accidently seperated from envelopes, etc.... They will do research and then begin calling persons attached to the Amex account or the checking account. They are simply trying to get the payment applied so that the Amex account doesn't go past due (which happens if the check is simply returned to the bank or the writer of the check.)  When checks are simply returned, customers get upset (usually claiming that they sent a stub when they didn't, or the check had an account number written on it, which can be smeared or damaged if wet or ripped.)  Again, if you don't feel comfortable calling that number, then call the number on the back of your card. This is especially important if you sent a payment and it hasn't shown yet.  There may be a reason.  Thanks.
