Caller represented himself to be a detective from Fraud (ironic) who wanted information on a man I never knew. Left this as a call-back number. Since it was an 866 number, I Googled it only to find out it is a debt collection company. I think this subterfuge is illegal. Just don't be intimidated.

I just received a call from this number saying that he was Larry Burns with the Interstate Sex Systems.  I know noone maney so I assumme that this stems from a lawsuit whereby I sued the City of San Antonio, San Antonio Water Systems.  Their attorney is Henry B Gonzalez, III a real scum bag.  Spread the word.

Received a call with a return number of 866-629-9947 claiming it was in regards to allegations of wire fraud in connection to our step-son with our name as a reference and it was important to return the call with a case number to conclude the investigation. Scared the crap out of us until I looked up the number and found this website. Obviously it's an attempt to collect a debt. This is total misrepresentation and fraud on the callers part. Isn't that illegal??? I wonder who we can complain to since we have no legal obligation for our 30 year old step-son who we don't even know his where-abouts. Isn't there some kind of rules of conduct in these types of debt recovery companies? I am very MAD about being subjected to this type of harassment. This isn't over for me, I intend to pursue the matter.

As I suspected, it is illegal for a debt collector to use or make fraudulent statements or identify themselves falsely in order to collect a debt. This was posted from another forum and states:

Do I have any recourse if I think a debt collector has violated the law?
You have the right to sue a collector in a state or federal court within one year from the date the law was violated. If you win, the judge can require the collector to pay you for any damages you can prove you suffered because of the illegal collection practices, like lost wages and medical bills. The judge can require the debt collector to pay you up to $1,000, even if you can’t prove that you suffered actual damages. You also can be reimbursed for your attorney’s fees and court costs. A group of people also may sue a debt collector as part of a class action lawsuit and recover money for damages up to $500,000, or one percent of the collector’s net worth, whichever amount is lower. Even if a debt collector violates the FDCPA in trying to collect a debt, the debt does not go away if you owe it.

Anyone up for a class action suit?

    Bossy
They called and left a message threatening my 67 year old mother. Claiming she had "allegations against her name and social security". What they didn't know is A) my husband and I both worked in a call center for a very long time. These people are skip tracers. They work for a collection company that buys old debts from companies (whether they have been paid off or not) and find people they hope are dumb enough to not know what they paid and what they didn't. And B) Defaulting on any unsecured debt is not a criminal matter!!! It's civil. And unless you owe more than $5000 NO COMPANY is going to sue. It would cost them more than that to do so. Skip tracers are the scum of the telemarketing world and that's already setting the bar pretty low. Ignore them when they call or if you're bored play with them. LOL I frustrated 1 company calling for someone I didn't know so bad they stopped calling!

A person I work with and used as reference for an on-line loan told me today that she received a VM on her cell phone telling her it was important for her to call this number 866-629-9947 regarding an investigation.  She was really upset.  Said she thought one of her kids were in trouble.  Called them asking if they needed to tell her something before she actually called the number back.  When she called them they told her it was in regards to me.  She took the information and gave it to me this morning when I came into work.  I am embarrassed to say that I have put myself in this position in the first place, however, it is what it is.  I made a mistake at a time of desperation and can't get out of this mess.  When I have tried to make arrangements, I have had to deal with rude, unrealistic collection people. They want amounts that I can't pay if I want to pay my rent, utilities and feed my two daughters (and I do not mean steak).  So, what do we do?  Not only are they unrealistic about the amounts they want you to pay in order to clear it up, but they also add the finance charges and interest that adds up to basically double the amount that you owed to begin with.  Why can't they just work with people?  I am sure they do this job because they need to make a living also, but I would rather clean toilets than have a job lying to people who are working hard and yet down on thier luck.  Please advise.  I feel crushed and I am worried sick.

Suggest calling your state's division of consumer affairs and check if the lender can legally lend in your state in the first place, and if the debt collector can legally collect in your state. I've heard of situations where online lenders who continue to lend in states that have barred payday loans (are you in such a state?) can only collect the principal but not interest or penalties. Collectors have to be licensed by your state to collect in your state. If unlicensed, don't pay and report them as trying to collect illegally.
Beware scammers are using bought/hacked loan application data to extort payments for fictitious debts from victims and victims' families and friends.
The FBI warns about payday loan extortion scams here http://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/paydayloanscam_120710
The BBB has issued several alerts on this scam, just google "bbb.org alert phony debt collector"
You need to figure out if this collection call is legit or scam. Suggest asking the original lender if they've sold your debt, to whom, etc.
Suggest reading through the FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf to understand the collection process, especially Section 809(a). The FDCPA applies to 3rd-party debt collectors and some creditors but never to original creditors.
What you choose to do will depend on what options are available to you and it's impossible to give any meaningful advice here without knowing your unique financial situation. Suggest consulting a local debt counselor. Whatever you do, interest and penalties will continue to accrue and they are typically very high for payday loans. Best of luck.

I received a phone call today asking for a person (not my name) in regards to a complaint of malicious intent against a financial institution. The name that they used was not mine but referenced my last name. They said if I didn't call back a summons would be sent to my house. I called the number back. I am worried now that I shouldn't have. He said that he knew I wasn't that person he was calling about--but thought I was a family member. He said he would take my name off the list. I told him I didn't appreciate being accused of malicious intent--and he then denied saying it. I told him I have the voicemail. He then got rude and said he would take me off the list. I have been getting calls from this number every day for several weeks. I never picked up as I didn't recognize the number. Today was the first time they left a message. The name of the company is ICS. Has anybody heard of it--and is there anything I should do?

They called me and said they were sent a fax from my county and I was being charged with "attempt to defraud" and that I needed to call her right away as they were conducting an in depth background check on me and I was in serious trouble.  I have the voicemail with all of that on it, so I am certainly interested in the class action suit and have some great evidence to help the cause!!!!!

Thanks for the information..  I just received a call at work again this time from 866-629-9947.  It was not me that answered my phone and the guy "Jeremy Fisher" was telling my co-worker that he was calling regarding a legal matter.  she told him I was not there and could she take a message.  He started telling her the info and she said "How about if I transfer you to the HR department".  He said "That will be fine"  He left a message there stating that I need to return the call to  "ICS" at the above number because it is in regards to a legal issue.  Gave a "case or ref number".  Left an extention number.  Then went on to say there is possibly some fradulent activity goin on with my bank account.  Are they allowed to leave messages like that to just anyone?  Please advice.
