I got a voicemail (ignored the call) saying they were united health care, which I have, but they were asking for the parent or guardian of someone I've never heard of. The name wasn't even closely related to anyone in my family. If uhc really needs to get in touch with my family they'll go through my husband as he is the primary  on it, and they'll know who they are calling.

I got the same thing. They called asking about my son and left a voicemail. I didn't call back and then they called a few days later asking for his birth date. I called UHC directly and they have no idea what these calls are about.

I got the same message from "United Healthcare".  I hung up and called the number on my card. They had no way to confirm the number. I really think that it is UHC that is making the call (same automated system, if I enter the "wrong birth date" it says incorrect, etc), but without a way to confirm 100%, there is no way I'm giving them any real info.

I talked to a supervisor and she understood the problem and said she was going to look into it, but I'm guessing that will go nowhere.  If it is UHC, this practice is truly negligent and goes against all of the lessons we are teaching people in avoiding scams.

After multiple attempts, the most recent being 11/5/13, 11/7 and 11/9... I decided to call back just to see if there would be a live operator.  As with all the posts above, it asked me if I was the parent of [my son's name].  The claimed they were from United Healthcare.  I foolishly said, "yes."  It then asked me to "confirm" my son's birthdate.  That's when I realized this was probably wasn't a good idea and hung up; I then searched for  "scam" and this number-- and found this site.    I suppose if it was a real site, the people would not be looking up the internet... it's mostly us suspicious types.  And my guess that in a week or two, the 866 number will change.  But for now, we will never know what kind of malicious ways they can use this info or how they received personal data to being with.  The number the original spam number was: (866) 649-3296.

I had a call from this number just now, voice mail said to call back. When I called back, I was asked for my son's birthdate as well -- I entered a wrong birthdate and it said it couldn't match and I shouldn't try again. At that point, I was sure it wasn't a scam, but I went ahead and called UHC directly. The lady there said they were robocalling to verify "coordination of benefits" and the call was likely about that (she took care of that issue for me).

TL;DR: I don't believe this is a scam, rather a legit call from UHC.

Called UHC directly after I received this call.  After 30 minutes being sent to every dept, they still have no idea why I received this call about my daughter.  I'm not going to give a robot my daughter's info.

Got several calls from this number claiming to be United Healthcare. It felt wrong so I never provided any information. I doubl checked this phone number againsat my UHC insurance card and it was not there. I did an internet search and found this site. I emailed UHC to let them know. I am inclined to believe that this is a phishing scam to get your kids information.

    Eric,
Interestingly enough, I am the one researching this issue for you at UHC.  The reason we are having a problem verifying things is because this number is a dial out number.  You should be hearing back from us on this asking for some more information.  Such as the number that you received this call on.  I am not going to ask you anything as I will wait for the person you contacted to come back to you with the questions.  I just want you (and anyone else that is reading the page) to know that we take these matters seriously and are working to correct any confusion that is occurring.

Why laddie, a bit early to be hittin the sauce aint it now?  Why would a reputable health care company reply to a person on this web site instead of communicating with them directly?

Well, in trying to research this issue, we found this site and felt a need to actually let the member(s) know that it is being taken seriously and we are investigating this thoroughly.  If you noticed, I said that I would not ask him any information as that would be wrong.  UHC is trying to reach out to the member to ask the information based on the contact info they gave us.

    Eric,
This call is in fact from UHC.  It is part of the 2015 Childhood Immunization/Well-Child Visits Campaign.  If you are still not sure you trust thus, please call your member services TFN on the back of your card and mention the campaign.  They were supposed to be made aware of the campaign.  However, they may not have recognized the number.  Below you will see some of the data that we can share on the program and calls you receive:

    Program Overview
o    The 2015 Childhood Immunization/Well-Child Visits Campaign is an automated interactive voice response (IVR) call and reminder letter mailing outreach program designed and implemented to impact childhood immunization rates and well-child visits by encouraging parents/guardians of children who are
turning 15 months and/or children who are turning two years of age to take their child regularly to the doctor for well-child visits and to ensure their child is up-to-date with immunizations.
o    The automated call provides educational content and collects the parent’s/guardian’s intent to take their child to visit the child’s doctor.
o    The letter highlights similar content as mentioned in the call. Also, the letter includes an insert of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2015 Recommended Immunization Schedule.
o    The campaign outreaches to Commercial members only (applicable to Self-Funded and Fully Insured members).

That should explain why so many of the people on the thread were talking about their childs DOB.  The DOB is related to the need for immunizations.  I hope this helps and sets your mind at ease.  As I stated, feel free to contact the TFN on the back of your member card and mention this.  We are sorry for any confusion
