TheWorkNumber (yes, that's their actual name) IS a real business. I process loans at Citi and we do use them for employment verification as it can become a tedious process with some employers. Large companies such as Walmart, McDonalds, AT&T, the FDIC, Citi, etc. are customers of TheWorkNumber. So, that means that if we have a borrower employed at one of these big companies, we can verify their employment right there on the website. But for any other company, the representatives at TheWorkNumber will call to obtain verification of ACTIVE employment. This is done just to make sure that a borrower is still employed at the time of the closing, which is why it is usually done right before or after the closing is scheduled. That's why they only request a start date and verification that the borrower is actively employed. And believe me, people will stop working or lose their job and not inform us...specifically on refinances.
If anybody wants to check, their website is the same as their name: theworknumber.com.

Any so called "company" would not have business practices where they are not allowed to leave a name or number to contact, per the hispanic woman on the phone, nor any contact information on a fax that they send to my work, nor any phone numbers that can be located, or construe to the actual company listed, and provide requests with outdated information, the request was 6 yrs old !!!  No request for active employment had been given since that date, there is no need because I havent bought anything requiring loan verification.. say what you want, but I think it's a shady, underhanded operation.   ANY company that chooses to do business with a company such as "The Work Number" leaves themselves open to questionable doubt, and business practices as such, and anyone who cares to defend them, such as you did, leaves that same doubt of questionability in my mind... There's complaints all over the internet about this company, pull your head out of the sand, or are you one of them?

To speak to a human at the main office for The Work Number in St Louis is impossible..It's all prompts that direct you to the internet if at all possible. TWN8666623339 is out of texas or they claim to be.. They also claim to be a divsion of Equifax. They stated the employment verification was issued 12/11/12, sent 12/12/12, and completed today 12/13/12. I faxed the documents sent to my employer to CitiMortgage since TWN8666623339 claims Citi requested it, yet Citi has no record for a request, and claims this request would come from Citi themselves " in house" by UPS or similar certifiable sevices. Citi seems genuinely concerned, since a document with my signature was provided to my employer dated from 2006, and it appears to have come from Citi's files.. I also informed them that The Work Number 8666623339 is all over the internet as irreputable.. They looked it up while I was on the phone with them, and are apparently looking into the matter.. We'll see what happens.. I'm not letting this rest...

"Deanne" left a message at work claiming to be calling on behalf of CitiMortgage, where we completed a re-finance about 2 months ago.  It seemed a bit odd that Citi would be verifying employment after the fact, but I returned the call.  The person who answered just said "Equifax, may I have your reference number?"  I gave the reference number hoping to find out why Citi needed the info.  He said they couldn't give out that information.  When I said I would check with Citi before giving the info he requested, he said he could document in my file that I "refused to provide requested information."  I told him to hold off on that, since if it was a legitimate request, I didn't want to mess up my credit file.  I called CitiMortgage, and they said there's NOTHING in our file with Citi that would have triggered a request for employment verification.  She recommended that I ignore the call.

Caller sent fax to my employer trying to verify my income and employment. Called back - a man under the name of Joan James alleged to be a third party mortgage verification company. I called my mortgage company to confirm if this request was legitimate. It is not! The scarriest part is that they somehow had a copy of my husband's and my signature which was sent with the request of verification of employment.

My mortgage company recommended to keep an eye on all my bank accounts and place a fraud block through the credit bureau.

I am so glad my employer checked with me before sending my info!!!

I received a call from this company wanting an employment verification for one of our employees. The woman on the phone only gave me the name Cassandra from Equifax. I told her she need a signed authorization before I could give her anything. She faxed an authorization to me but I couldn't read any of it other than the title (with grammatical errors mind you) and the employee's signature. I emailed the employee... the last thing I want to do is give someone info that should have it, but I also didn't want to hold up the process of them getting a loan or something. He got back to me saying it was legit and okay to send the info to them.

Bottom line... they seem to be an actual company, just not a very good one.

They said it was Equifax calling to VERIFY EMPLOYMENT, left a reference number and phone number.  THis is the second such call in as many weeks.  I returned the first call, said I never heard of the individual.  They replied, that's okay becasue someone already verified their employment.  Uh - I am the only person in the firm who does that.  I say this is fraud.

Received a call from "Equifax". They left a message and a reference number. She spoke so fast that I have no idea who she needed the information on. Also, she called on a back line that is strictly for purchasing. Dont even know how she came by this number as it isnt published.

Received an e-mail with this number as the return number. It was sent during work hours, so I'm confused as to why they didn't just call.

Anyway, the employee they're looking for information on is a temp, and an 18 year old temp at that.

He has no idea why anyone would be asking to verify his information.

Legitimate VOE's don't email out of the blue.

Something is a little fishy here.

Got a call from this number stating he was from equifax after hours last night.  Called today rang then went straight to music.  When someone did answer I gave them the ref # they had left and they wanted to verify employment on a former employee and could they fax over the paperwork.  Got paperwork asking for the normal residential loan info.  But the company header on the fax did not state anything but a bunch of numbers and the company name on paperwork was The Work Number.  The paperwork was not signed just the persons name typed out.  Did a little searching and found this thread.  Called the mortgage company name they were using and they had no Idea who the company was but please don't give out any info.

VM left asking for a verification on an employee who no longer works here.  They even got the last name wrong.  It must be a scam as I know that this employee is gainfully employed and if they were refinancing, the current lender would have the employees current information to verify employment.  Caller said they were from Equifax.  Very odd and highly suspect.

Couldn't understand where she was calling from.. sounded like Record Sacks?? Weird call. Not returning the message. They can call again if they want to get information. But I will not disclose this information to them over the phone.

The Work Number is a legit company that does PROVIDES salary and employment verification on behalf of companies and organization. This phone call, on the other hand, is most likely fraud because they claim to be from the Work Number calling for information. They have it backwards. It's like the electric company calling you to turn on their power. Don't fall for it!

This is Equifax, calling to verify employment records for credit check type stuff. They called regarding a past employee of ours, and as far as I'm aware they are a legit company, not a scammer. Annoying, but not a telemarketer.

Sent "Verfiication of Employment and Income" paperwork that claimed to be from "Radian Guaranty".  The paperwork they sent is extremely sloppy - very poor usage and consistency with capitalization, incorrect spelling of my name.  They did have a copy of a portion of a form that I signed showing my signature but it is so grainy you cant even tell what form it may have been from.  They also had my last 4 digits of my SSN on the paperwork they wanted to be filled out by my employer - called the number provided and it claims to be Equifax, but nowhere was Equifax mentioned on any of the paperwork sent.  Told them that I would not be allowing the verification paperwork to be sent to them.
