- ShadeTreeFolks, 'Department of Legal Services' is at it again. They have a brand new, shiny phone number and they're not afraid to use it. I received a call from 'Sharon' on a debt that went bad over 12 years ago, threatening me that papers were being served which could result in wage garnishments, blah, blah, blah. They attempt to make you believe that they are 'government contracted', which is a JOKE. Don't fall for it!
If 'Sharon' happens to give you a call (she's the one with that sounds like she's smoked cigarettes since she was 12), play along with her and have some fun. Keep her on the phone for as long as possible so that she will make fewer phone calls--especially to unsuspecting consumers who may fall for her line of BS.
Again, have fun. She's really a lot of fun to mess with.- Caller: Department of Legal Services
- Call type: Debt collector
- yevonnne| 1 replyGot a voicemail from Paul Miller on this number says he has been trying to contact me on this matter and that papers have been sent to me I tried and tried to call back have no idea what this is about
- ShadeTree replies to yevonnneHi Yevonne. They will try to scare you into paying, but hopefully you realize this is a scam.
- Patrice| 1 replyi got the same call regarding an account that was owed to my previous bank. I did contact the bank and they did verify that the amount owed is correct. I know that i owed the money but don't get why they waited 3 years to go after me for it.
- ShadeTree replies to PatriceHi Patrice. Even though you may owe the debt, this collector uses illegal collection practices. THEY ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE PAPERS SERVED TO YOU! A real process server does not contact you to make arrangements to deliver legal documents to you.
- Patrice| 2 repliesshade tree i'm a little confused because my call wasn't about a process server, it was about my bank account that i had an outstanding balance on. Do i not pay them???? who do i pay??? Its been years and i forgot about it but the bank says its valid.
- ShadeTree replies to PatricePatrice, do you want to pay the debt? If so, pay it.
Just because a debt is valid does not mean that you legally have to pay it. If you don't want to pay the debt, there may be no LEGAL obligation, depending on the age of the debt. For example, if the age of the debt exceeds the Statute of Limitations in the state you reside, then you have a defense if pursued by legal means.
Either way, I would be willing to bet that this company would not pursue the debt by legal means, no matter what happens. - ShadeTree replies to PatriceBy the way, Patrice, say Hi to 'Sharon' for me.
