- Caller ID Should be Mandatory replies to Jamesall legit companies know that when they are asked for their corporate name and address they are required to disclose it. failure to provide that information could make their calls harrassing, which is illegal. generally, one or two calls is not harassing - but the number they made to you coupled with their failure to disclose their identity is likely harrassing. report them to the attorney general in your state immediately.
- Take Control of Your Incoming Calls replies to MandyThese mystery numbers will always likely remain a mystery. Some companies will use technology that allows them to change the caller ID information on their outgoing calls. Yes, it exists. [Note that when you call a toll free number, there is also technology that identifies your number - even if you block your own caller ID. This is used to route calls to regional call centers in many situations - but in any event it will give the company your phone number!]
The legit companies may ajdust their caller ID to have all calls into the company directed to a certain number - such as a service company directing return calls to their service scheduling representatives. Questionable companies will use this to avoid identifying themselves, like most all of the numbers on 800Notes.
While it may be impossible to know what company is calling, it may be possible to use your phone company services to identify the caller. Most phone companies have various call rejection options that allow only certain calls to ring through to your home. There are also automatic call-back features that identify the number and/or allow you to call back to the number - even if it does not appear in caller ID. But questionable companies often get around these features by reprogramming their outgoing caller ID to provide a number and so not be flagged as an anonymous call.
There is a great device that allows you to take almost complete control over your incoming calls. The Caller ID Manager [not a sales pitch or product recommendation] costs about $100. But it has a "wildcard" feature that can be used to send all calls from a certain prefix - such as 866 calls - directly to voice-mail without the phone ringing. If you cannot get them to stop calling, at least you can stop the ringing! See the device at http://www.privacycorps.com/products/?id=20&gclid=CN-s4LSxlJECFQYuHgodTS0pIw
Then, you may use a message like this - as some do - as your voice-mail message: I'm sorry we can't take your call right now. You must leave a message because we are receiving and tracking annoyance calls to this phone. Failing to leave your name and valid phone number will identify you as an annoyance caller. Please leave your name and valid phone number. Thank you. - just another victimThe phone has rang several times today all from this number. When I do answer it, it says "Please hold for a very important phone call". I tried holding for several minutes and all I got was dead air. I think it may belong to a company that has purchased some records from collection agencies, althouth I have not "positive proof" as of yet.
- Yet another harrassed calleeThis caller apparently got hold of a debt record for my ex-spouse and is now calling me at work, home, etc. It's very annoying, and they won't stop. How can I block them altogether?

- Jill| 1 replyThis compaay has been calling my home for at least 2 months. The person they are trying to reach no longer lives at this number. I have told them this EVERY time they call. I have also called back to let them know that my number is on a do-not-call-list. They "say" they have made a note of it, but it has not stopped the calls. They call as early as 8:45am and as late as 9pm. When they ask for the person who no longer lives here, I ask who is calling. They are very reluctant to give even the company name. When you call back, they answer by saying "hello", not a company name.

- CReilly replies to JillHi! I actually think this is a scam and they are not a collection agency. There is a collection agency called Alliance One and I happened to find their real address and phone number and it does not match with this number. And since a collection agency calls you to collect money (like they did to me). It didnt make any sense to me because I dont have debts. I just turned 18 a couple of weeks ago there for could not get a credit card until like last week. And the only thing that I have that comes close to a credit card is my debit card. So i looked at my online bank account today and I wasnt in the negatives because I always make sure I have money in there. I dont even have college loans. I dont think anyone should give these people their info.
