I got a message on my answering mach of landline ph @5:53 pm 6/14/12 Thurs saying "this message is for (my 1st & last name given) & that the call was from the Board of Education & gave their ph # (the one listed on this page) & told me to please call it back. I am 80 yrs old & have NOTHING to do with Education nor have any family member in it! What gets me is:

HOW did this woman know my full name & ph #??? It did NOT sound like a recording either. Now  this IS an invasion of my privacy & with my answering maching picking up the call while I was not home, they know my ph # is definitely a GOOD-Live workable # & I'm SURE to keep getting calls from them over & over!

I will NOT be gullible & call them back. NEVER!! Need HELP stopping these STUPID DAILY calls. Not one day goes by that we don't get at least one of these type calls.

A little bit of a correction to my 1st posting on this #!! I listened to my msg on landline ans mach again & it said: "Hello, this is Dolly May, Dept of  Education LUNG Servicing. This is a msg for (my 1st & last names). It is important that you return our call today at our toll free # 866-723-7373. My name was inserted by a different lady's voice. How much of it was a recording I couldn't tell!

But STILL I have NOTHING  to give input on this subject PLUS I STILL want to know HOW they got my exactly correct 1st & last name!!!!

I still don't want them calling me as I did NOTHING to initiate this call.

Got the same message today.  Automated woman's voice identified it as a message from Sallie Mae and said someone had listed me as a reference on a college loan application.  SCAM!

Got a call (3rd or 4th) from these people -Sally Mae Student Loan- something or other. I called them back
and the wanted my phone number- I replied "you called me. You have the number." I was put on hold.
I asked who applied for the loan that I was a reference on. "We can't tell you due to privacy matters."
I asked how long ago the application was submitted. "I can't tell you, but about 1-2 years ago."

They eventually gave me the name of the applicant and wanted me to verify the address and phone number.
I answered "you have the address and phone on the application, tell me what it is and I'll verify it."
They refused and asked me to have the applicant call them ASAP.

Sounds like a scam to me as I'm not a reference on any student loan applications....

I received a call from this number saying they were Sallie Mae and I was listed as a reference for a student loan. They left this office number (same as the caller ID number) and ended with their office hours.

    Bogus.

I got a call from this number today, saying I was listed as a reference for a Sally Mae student loan. Thank goodness I decided to look it up before calling back. If someone actually used me as a reference, they should tell me to expect a call - otherwise I'm not biting.

I received a call from these people today and they left a message. They said the message was for XX (my boyfriend's first name used as the first name and my first name used for the last name) and asking for an updated contact number for a Veronica Bevins. Neither of us have heard of this person. I called them back and they wanted to know the number that had been called. They asked if I was XX. I said no and that we did not know a Veronica. I told the woman they screwed up their scam because they used our first names to create a new person she quickly apologized, said she's remove my number and hung up.

I got a call from them today.  Called them back bec. my niece did inform me that she used my name and number as a reference for loan refinancing for her college loans.  I did call back because of this knowledge.  And they did verify it was for my niece's account(s).  But they were trying to get her home number.  I know she has fallen behind on payments and they likely tried to call my parents, too, but they have no answering machine.  Not sure this is a scam, but I am pretty certain they are trying to collect a debt and getting updated information on a debtor.

I got The same message today and I called back, as it turns out it was for a family member that I know who has also fallen behind on their student loans.   I am lucky because I do not have that family members phone number so I just told them I didn't have the number and they said thank you and that was it.

Looks like a shill for the scam trying to make it sound like a legitimate call.

It's legit.  It is Sallie Mae who manages student loans for the Dept. of Ed.  They do ask you the phone number which was called and then they will tell you the student who used you as a reference.  I wasn't afraid to do this since the number called actually belongs to a coworker who told me about the message.  I did know the person although I didn't know he used me as a reference.  I wasn't able to give them any more info, so they said they would remove my name and number from the file.  I didn't ask but I have no doubt they are trying to collect on defaulted student loans.

I got the call today regarding my dead-beat ex son-in-law.  When I could finally stop laughing,
I told the girl what I thought of him and she thank me and wished me a nice day.  Knowing him, they are probably trying to collect on a loan.

I got a call from a different number, but they left this number to call back on my voicemail. They said they were calling from Sallie Mae and to call back, but they used my nickname instead of my full name, which was the first sign something was off. I called back there was a recording that sounded like the woman who called-- another thing I found odd. It said something like, "Thank you for calling Sallie Mae. Please hold for a representative. Your call may be recorded for quality purposes."  When I spoke with the representative, she asked for my account number first, and when I didn't give that, for my social. I told her I was uncomfortable giving that over the phone, and that they would have to call me back if they needed to speak with me about something. Then I found my actual Sallie Mae documents and called the number from there. It was a completely different automated system, and the real representative told me nobody tried to contact me and that number was not one of theirs. It was definitely a scam! DO NOT provide any info to them! It freaks me out that they knew I had a Sallie Mae account and had my name and phone number. Glad I trusted my instincts!

This caller used my first and last name and left a message on my answering machine. The caller said that I was given as a reference and to call the number to verify. Needless to say, I have not called back.
I have caller ID and do not pick up if no ID is given.

I received a message from Sallie May Dept. of Ed asking me to call them back at (866) 723-7373.  The message said that I was listed as a reference on a student loan application.  Knowing a number of my friends children in college, I called back.  They asked by phone number and name and told me that JOSHUA STOKES listed me as a reference.  I have no idea who JOSHUA STOKES is.  The gentlemen said that he would take my name off the the application.  Should I have not given out my info?

This is a real debt collector for student loans.
If they call, you were listed on the application as either the closest relative or a reference. The reason they are calling is because they have been unable to reach the person who initiated the loan and want to know if you have any current contact information. If you don't want them to call, tell them YOU did not take out a loan, and you don't know where the person they want is, and you will call THEM if you gain any info. And tell them in the meantime not to call you!
Worth a try - worked for us (so far)
