This is the IRS examination department.  In other words, they're auditing you.

The person on the other end didn't have a clue, I made them give me their number and called them back myself.  These are supposed to be government employees, scary!

Scam. The IRS will not call you. They send letters via US Mail. The IRS won't ask you to pay in i-Tunes cards. The IRS will not wish you "good luck as the situation unfolds". Trust yourself and your instincts - do not let a bully intimidate you by threats that are nothing but hot air (and bad breath). This is a SCAM.

Do not answer calls you don't know and never call them back.

The 866-897-0177 is the general IRS Tax Examination number.
If you have received a written  Examination Report and you disagree with it,
call the number or the number on the report.

If you have not been the subject of a tax examination by the IRS and you
receive a communication with this call-back number, chances are that this is
some sort of spoofed number and is a tax scam.

I am an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (inactive) and I can tell you that the IRS
initiates contact by US mail only.

Do not consider paying anyone anything in the absence of official
written communications   from the IRS.

Please note that any initial   determination of tax liability is always subject to
re-consideration.  Or appeal.   Complex tax issues should be handled by either an
Enrolled Agent or a CPA.

People, this is a SCAM!  The IRS will NEVER call you.  All of their communication is done via mail.  If someone calls you claiming to be from the IRS and claiming that you owe money, HANG UP!!!  Do NOT talk to these people and DEFINITELY do not give them any of your personal/financial information!  It's nothing but a scam.
