Received a message from Christina at Meridian Recovery Solutions claiming there is a debt and their attempt to send documentation was returned.  I have searched their name and number at great lengths, and cannot seem to find anything that proves or denies their validity.  I have not called back, as I do not want to confirm my contact information if this is a scam.  I have been victim in the past, so I am leery.  The number came through as Unknown, but the return number is 866-899-2410.  Any one else received a call from this group or asked to return a call at this number?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

SCAM This number claims to have sent paperwork, but that it was returned. They say they need to "clear up a debt". These people used to call me from a different number (I'm sure it's the same scammer people). They promise to send you something in writing and then never do. I gave them my email, and they never sent anything even when they said they would. They like to leave no trace so they can disappear as quickly as they can after they get your credit card number.
Not to mention, the line sounds crackly, like they are calling from the internet. They say they have no website (then how did someone hire you to collect a debt?) SCAM

    Seriously
Called from 8668993150, asked to call back on 866-899-2410. Voicemail left with reference number. However, the girl sounded like she just started work today and the recording was muffled and broke up making me think this might even be overseas scammers. Although two toll free numbers at least they're putting a little effort into it.

I don't think she said the paperwork had been returned. Just it was urgent.

They say they are part of Smith, Reid (Reed) and Associates, A law firm. Actually they are a collection agency. AKA Star Negotiations among other names. I had set up a payment arrangement with them on an old bill. But the whole thing has been sketchy from the start. And now I have cancelled by debit card because once again they have changed the name of the company that pulls the money from my account. Now if they want money it is going to be on my terms, I will send them a money order or they get nothing. I am going to call after work to speak with them and point out all the illegal things they did in the process of getting me to pay this old debit. Be leery!

Received a call from this number today. The man who left the message sounded like he had no idea what he was talking about, and mentioned that they had made multiple attempts to reach out to me in regards to a property associated with my phone number. Definite scam as I do not own any property whatsoever. Called back and they said they were looking for my mother,.....still a definite scam considering that she owns no property either. Luckily I hung up before they could try to receive my moms contact info.

I received a call today from a Jodi at Meridian Recovery Solutions 866-341-4440 saying that i was being sued for a debt and that she was trying to help me before sending me to court. I asked for validation of debt and she denied my request saying that she was looking at it. She said i need to come up with all the money before the end of the year. It sounded very fishy to me :(

No debt validation, no debt. It's that simple.

How can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:

The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.

The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.

The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.

The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.

Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
    The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
    Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
    Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.

Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.

Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

Please report them to the attorney general's office. It takes 10 minutes online, they are good scammers and people unfortunately give them money. You can see my story about Larry if you look up 866-341-4440. They break every law in the book right out of the gate.

They called me today stating I will owed them money from an old debt from 2007 that was charged off but now they have decided they now want the money. Going to take me to court, garnish my wages. Even contacted my son to get in contact with me. Told them how can they charge it off then want their money now. Besides I never had this debt ever. SCAM

As you said, it's a scam. If they call back, and you decide to answer the phone, demand a debt validation letter be mailed to you. That's MAILED, via the US Mail. Email, fax, and phone call are not legal methods. If they refuse to, state they already did, or claim you'll receive paperwork AFTER you pay them, you've got your confirmation they're a scam. By law, they have to mail a VOD to you within 5 business days of first contacting you.

They said I had a credit card debt that had to be paid or I was getting sued. I fell for it and paid half.  Now they want the other half and I've been harassed and threatened.

If you paid them by debit or CC card, go back to the bank and have the transaction reversed for fraud.  Have a fraud alert put out.  Also change out any financial account numbers you may have given them.

Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.

If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

    1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
    2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
    3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  dime until the debt is validated

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.

If they are bothering you, report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a  violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.)  The same goes for endless telephone harassment

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.
You have to get tuff with these people because,  being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking),  the only thing they understand.
