Jill Singleton from Duke Health, she said.  Had my street address and my name.  Asked for my date of birth.  no.  I verified that Jill SIngleton is the name of a Duke Health Employee though a google search did not reveal that.

So just asked that one question?  What did she need that info for exactly?  Does Duke Health mean anything to you?  Seems to be a hospital or heathcare in NC.  Might be legit if you have been a patient.  The safe thing to do is find out what "Jill" wanted, maybe what department she works in, and call Duke Health on a number YOU look up, not what "Jill" gives you.   If you have not had mail from Duke, that is another red flag to me.

Received a call from this number but no message left.  I called back and the guy could only say I reached the business office. I asked with what company and he said Duke Health.  He wanted my information to see why they would be calling.  I asked him to tell me what department he was with at Duke and all he kept saying is the business office.  I explained that I need to know if it is regarding an appointment, health information or collections (even though I don't owe anything) or something else, and he said he can't tell me what type of business they need until I give him my information.  Sounds like fraud/scam to me.  Sorry, you aren't getting my information.

Absolutely spam. I used to work for Duke Medicine and there is no "Duke Health business office." There is a separate business office in each and every department.  And collections – if anyone is wondering if that's what it is – would come from the PDC or hospital billing customer service offices.   Even if I didn't have this back on knowledge, this number called my new cell phone and Duke has never had that cell phone number. Definitely NOT LEGIT.

Caller said they were "Lindsey" from Duke Health Business Office, asked me to confirm Date Of Birth... I interrupted to say I never give out personal information to random callers. She asked me to call back. I can't find any such office... so, no.

I got a call from the same number this morning and he was David. And he said is from duke health business. he kept asking for my birthdate and for some reasons I found it fraud as he wasn't ready to give me any details or the reasons for calling me out. I told him I don't feel comfortable giving any information. One moment I believed in him as we have been a patient at duke but my instincts said it could be a fraud so didn't give any info. He gave his number and asked me to call back.

If you go to that hospital's website, the number they tell you to call is an 800 number or a 919 number, not an 866 number.  I would suggest that you find the number of the hospital on their official website, find the number for the billing department and call them directly.  This sounds a lot like someone impersonating the hospital to either get information from you or to try to get you to pay some "hospital bill" that they claim you owe.  If you owe money, they will usually send you several bills in the mail before attempting to call you.  It would seem very odd to have more than one piece of mail not reach you because it was lost.

There actually is a Duke Health Business department or something to that effect. I had procedures and consults in numerous specialities at Duke that racked up a large bill and I had to set up a payment plan through the Duke Medical/Health Business office to arrange and manage it. I had balances from four different departments but they were all handled together as one balance through the business office.  They would call once in awhile from an 866 number.

Ok, they called and left a message, so you knew who called and what the call was about.  It obviously wasn't a scam call, yet you took the time to look up the number just so you could report that you have an upcoming doctor's appointment?

Returned call from a different number. They "couldn't locate my account by my name." They needed the phone number they called to "locate my record". Positively a scam. Duke does not have a way to look you account up by your phone number. They find your record by 2 identifiers, and are required by law to use two identifiers, firstly your name and second identifier such as date of birth (usually the most common one they ask for) your medical record numcer if you know it, the numbers of your street address (not your whole address) or the LAST 4 of your social security number. I work for Duke University Medical System in a health care department.

This was a lady from the business office at Duke Health offering to set me up on a payment plan for an outstanding doctor bill that I had been trying to pay off.  I asked her to give me the personal information she had and I confirmed that what she had was correct.  She was very nice and I can get this taken care off monthly.

I called the number back and gave them the number they called to reach me.  The lady then said they were calling for **** (my full name) in reference to a family member **** (my daughter's full name).  She knew that my daughter was 18 and asked if she could authorize me to speak to them about the account.

This *is* a valid Duke Health number... but all the posts above are correct in looking into this as the original non-descript voicemail message and the 866 number were red flags for sure.

I used to work for a company in Durham,NC called PRC. A collections office that was contracted out through Duke health care. Other offices also contract out their services, which is why when you call they say “business office” and ask for your information so they can figure out which hospital you are with (Cone health, Granville, or Duke). It’s either collections, or if you have an aging bill, they will call you before it moves into collections to set up a payment plan or offer assistance. Laws require them to ask for your verification before they can give any personal billing info, or else they can be sued. Although it does come across as rather fishy.

Same as others, no way this is the Duke Business office.  We have two insurances and never have to pay anything.  We have never received a paper or electronic bill.  I gave them a number to call: 919-684-2444, the Duke Police.............

Its their billing office. They are under the impression you owe money to one of the multitude of Duke medical entities. It can be an urgent care, PT, Dr Office. who knows. They funnel all their “overdue bills” through their “business office.” You would think a “world class medical center” would have the capability of correctly billing your insurance. They do not. They are absolutely moronic in their ability to bill correctly. Their business office will call and ask for so much information to verify who they are speaking with because they are terrified of discussing an alleged bill with the wrong patient. Discussing a bill with the wrong patient would be a HIPPA violation and punishable by law. If they get enough HIPPA violations it would impede their ability to practice. It doesn’t have to be YOUR information “leaked” so to speak. If they speak to you about another patient that too is a HIPPA violation. Say for instance you are in the waiting room and a CT tech comes up and say to a patient near you MR X we have your result and called your dr. MR X says ok what did you tell the dr and the CT tech says nothing to worry about it was negative and DR Y said you just can go home and rest for a day or two.  Even though Mr X gave consent, so to speak by saying in a crowdedwairibg room “what did the Dr say” andtge CT tech took that as permission to speak publicly about the test results, YOU Person Z can STILL call and make a bonified HIPPA complaint. YOU do not have any right to hear anyone’s test result. It would be investigated and they would be found guilty of a HIPPA violation. That is why their business office goes to insane lengths to verify it is the actual patient they are speaking with and EVERY SINGLE phone call in that place IS recorded. In North Carolina as long as one of the two persons are knowledgeable about a call being recorded it is legal and WILL stand up in court.
