- Caller: EWIN SOFTECH
- Mike| 1 replyDefinite computer scam, placed some kind of malware on my computer--spent 2 hours trying to get the security message, inferred they were working for MicroSoft, off my computer. Pricing to remove and fix computer was 499.00 on line or 899.00 from some Green Store on Blue Bonnet drive Baton Rouge, LA. Finally did a restore back to 2 days back to get rid of it
- Caller: Ewin Softech
- Bonnie| 3 repliesHad message show up on my computer which locked me out of email, banking, etc. Said to call the above number which I did last night and they told me I did not have Firewall, which allowed my computer to be hacked. Showed me a map of where the messages were coming from, that they had access to my banking infor and all my i.d. Needless, to say I was terrified, am a 78 year old lady and they also told me my computer should be replaced within the next 6 months as I am still operating Windows XP. My total charge to my bank account was $349.00 Canadian.
They did use both names, Ewin Softech and Software Maniacs,- Caller: Ewin Softech/Software Maniacs
- William replies to BonnieGo to your bank and have the transaction blocked, or if it has already occurred, have it reversed.
That "message" was an aggressive javascript program created by criminals, that was inserted into an advertisement delivered to one of many ad agencies that supply advertising to websites. It's not your fault - these are successful at attacking all operating systems, even iPads and Linux systems.
However, you cannot be using Windows XP and do banking on the Internet.
It simply is not safe.
Get with a local computer expert and see what you need to get onto a more modern operating system. You can use a Linux Live CD also (which is what I do). Or you buy a new computer; these can cost less that $300.00 as you already have a keyboard and a monitor - unless you are using a laptop. Even then, many are available for less than $400.00 brand new. - William replies to BonnieForgot to mention : If the bank does not believe you that this is a transaction that MUST be reversed, go to your local police station and file a report : theft by deception or misrepresentation. Then take that report to the bank and demand the transaction be reversed.
- William replies to BonnieI looked up "Software Maniacs" and there are two companies using that name, one in the UK, and one in the USA.
http://www.softwaremaniacs.co.uk/ In the UK, says they are a software developer.
http://softwaremaniacs.com/ In the USA, says they are a software developer,
and includes this on their home page :
Warning: Someone called you claiming to be us?
We do not offer computer hardware or
software support over the phone. If you have
been contacted by someone claiming to be
from softwaremaniacs and offering to help fix
your computer it is NOT us. We never solicit
new business over the phone and you are
likely the target of a scam.

[ This report is poorly written, it mixes the two above companies. ]
The Ewin Softech looks like a lot of similar scam "software support" websites - full of promises but the "facts" are all lies.
Its registration appears to be owned by someone in India, who registered it with GoDaddy.
=== http://whois.domaintools.com/ewinsoftech.com
The current registration began on 2016-01-06, although the domain name has been in use by someone since 2007. The complaints began this year on this number.

- anonymousComputer Scam to make you purchase unnecessary firewall. Shut down your computer immediately and DO NOT call the number!!!
- Caller: Ewin softech/software maniacs
- kayyGot a message saying my computer was compromised, then my computer was locked with a display message saying I had to call Microsoft to fix the computer, and stop the hacking. When I called I spoke to "david reeds Williams" whom was supposed to be installing some type of protection on my computer. The charge was supposed to be 249.99 USD to complete the work he was doing, however, being a full time college student he allowed me to make payments. I have not made any payments. this is definitely a scam. He supposedly finished the work on my computer, but now my computer is useless. Hopefully I will get my laptop fixed soon- but heads up to anyone that receives a call from this number, it is a scam!!!
- Caller: MICROSOFT
- Chuck Hoyt| 1 replyI received a call and signed up for their "Maniac" service. Several times I contacted them to fix problems with my laptop and Mac PC, which they did.
I recently tried to contact them about a new problem, but was told the number is no longer in service.- Caller: Maniac

Thanks to Slim, another registered poster here and computer whiz:
Since the scammers accessed the computer, they probably did one or more of the following:
• Disabled the anti-virus software
• Added nasty malware to the computer
• Copied the Contact List (so they can spam/email your soon-to-be ex-friends)
• Copied any financial data or passwords they could find
• Compromised your ID on Facebook or other social site(s), and perhaps on shopping sites.
• "Zombied" the computer, so it would respond to THEIR commands sent via internet
• Deleted some important files
• Asked for money to repair the damage they caused
What can you do immediately after such an attack?
1. Pull the cables on the computer, or otherwise disable it, so it cannot access the internet.
2. Change ALL passwords stored on the computer.
3. Run FULL malware scans on the computer, in "SAFE" mode!
4. Change the passwords again, particularly if the malware scans showed anything.
5. Inform your bank and credit card companies.
6. Sign up for credit monitoring, and check the status frequently
7. Backup non-executable personal, data files to an external storage device. (Executable files might be infected).
8. You may have to bring the computer to a local repair shop, and tell them the story.
9. Tell friends what happened, so they can be aware of strange emails from you.
10. Connect to the internet only AFTER all the above have been done.
11. Change the passwords on all online accounts. Even better - access a "safe", uninfected computer, and change your online account passwords RIGHT NOW.
NOTE:
If your computer set a "Restore Point" while it was infected, any "System Restore" you make will re-infect your computer. Suggest you delete any potentially infected restore points and avoid setting such restore points until after your computer has been thoroughly cleaned!
You fell for one scam, and might be susceptible to others mentioned on this site:
http://phonehelp.2truth.com/facts.html
Read that info to educate and help protect yourself!
Honest computer companies do NOT cold-call people, or cause popups from websites to tell them their computers need fixing!
Some scammers even have websites, and falsely advertise they are associated with popular software packages or computer companies; so do NOT believe a "we will fix your computer remotely" site, and allow them access to your computer!
