I received a notice from BNY Mellon stating my personal information had been on an unencrypted tape lost by one of their vendors.  It lists this as their phone number along with an offer to sign up for free credit reporting for 12 months.

I also received a notice form BNY Mellon Shareowner Services.  It references JP Morgan Chase - but the only account with Chase that I have is a credit card.  I called them, and they are not affiliated with BNY Mellon.  Sounds like a scam to me.

I got the letter too.  The only difference the number the letter asked me to call is 877-278-3452 not 877-278-3461.

I called Mellon directly and the letter is legit. They did give me a different number to call to get more information. So look up Mellon Shareholders Services on Goggle and call them directly.

the phone # looks legit. I found it on the state of Conn. gov website. Looks like it affected quite a few people:

My concern is that this letter I received states three things that are untrue:
    1. That I am a Honda ASSOCIATE OR RETIREE,
    2. That I hold or have held stock in Honda and
    3. That I received a letter from BNY 'recently' with the same information and an activation code.

In addition, when I have received letters similar to this in the past, they have indicated that my personal information MAY have been compromised, rather than definitely was as stated on this letter.

A reverse lookup of the number associated with Experian on this letter yields no results.

My concern is that this letter is part scam, part truth. The number for Mellon is correct, and if I call that number I have a feeling they will tell me that they did not send me a letter. However, a lot of people will probably feel more comfortable calling the Experian number directly, as they are a company known for their credit reporting and monitoring, and will then divulge personal information....and that part is the scam.

I intend to call both numbers and play this out as long as possible without getting myself in trouble. I'll update with more information if I get it.

I just called, the recording said it was Mellong, but  recording said "due to high call volume, please try your call again later".

    I'm replying to myself...

I called both numbers and both were closed due to high call volume. The first number, the one that's definitely legit, identifies itself as a BNY Mellon number and asks the caller to select option 1 if you have received a letter with Honda letterhead.

The second number does NOT identify itself as Experian, but just says "Thank you for calling the customer care center" and gives the same high volume message.

I'm still very suspect and intend to call Experian's normal 1-800 number to investigate.

We received the letter too.  Very suspect of the letter due to the same reasons listed above.  We don't own any Honda Stock, Aren't a Honda employee, etc.

If anyone finds anything out, love to hear.

What's odd to me, is that the first post on this topic was two months ago, and suddenly 8 different people have posted TODAY, all within minutes of each other. How could these letters have been going out for months, without no update or public report from Chase? I hope this isn't a scam, and the people behind it are not posting here.

Having said that, I called Honda Manufacturing in Ohio, and was told they believe letters were accidentally sent out to JPMorgan Chase customers. However, there is no proof of this, as people I've personally spoken with at Chase, don't know anything about this letter.

What I don't understand, is how this letter could accidentally be sent to JPMorgan Chase customers, who only have checking accounts, and have never been shareholders, or done business with Honda or Mellon. Wouldn't those be different computer systems?

Also, which phone number asks callers to press "1" if they've received this letter? I have not heard a message like that. Thanks.

I too (actually, it was addressed to my wife) just received the letter...  Although, I had an account with Chase eons ago (long before I was married), my wife has never had any relationship with Chase or Honda.  She has had dealings with Mellon (employee stock purchase stuff for a COMPLETELY different company).  So, it seems that Mellon could be the link!?!?

If this isn't a scam, it seems that someone screwed up big time...

btw...  this is a very common practice - customize a phone tree to alleviate phone traffic.  especially when they are getting lots of calls for a particular problem.

My deceased Mother received a letter today (9/8/2008) & she has never had an account at JPMorgan, BNY or Honda.

The letter I received stated that I have until Sept 9th 2008 to signup for the free service from Experian.  I find it odd that only one day was provided to review and signup for the credit monitoring service.

I called the 877-278-3461 number also & was told to call back because of high call volume.

I happen to work for JPMorgan & have found no information that they are a part of this.  I will be researching more though.

I recieved a letter too.  I own a honda motorcycle, so I thought it had something to do with that.  The more I read it, I felt like it was a phishing scam.  We call and give our personal info.  I got on google to see if I could find out more info... I don't know anything more than you guys yet.

My wife also received this letter today.  She has never owned Honda Stock, never been a Honda Associate.  I found it odd too that they only gave you one day to call them.  I was concerned with the Experian number and this being a scam and, like someone else who posted previously, was unable to find anything on the Experian number.

My only thought was that we bought a new Honda back in '03 and the loan was through Chase.  But our loan was paid off in '05 and we have had no other dealings with Chase or Honda.

Looking forward to hearing any more details on this.  Seems there were quite a few of us that received these today.

The only thing I could find about lost backup tapes and BNY Mellon happened earlier in the year, in April I believe.  Why would they send this to us now?

    Reeks of scam to me.
