- Greg| 6 repliesCalled me several times, and some family members. "Call this 877 # and discuss legal options or go directly to court." Reported it to both the 800# owner and the FTC.
- Caller: Unknown Legal Company
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- BigA replies to GregThe 800# owner? You mean the phone carrier? I doubt that they will do anything with one complaint. The FTC? Since the FTC redirects you to the CFPB for debt collection complaints I have to wonder what type of call you claimed you got? Did you purposely lie to them?
- Yakim replies to Greg| 4 repliesThe office I work in has been getting complaints about this same number from the clients. In every instance, the person or family were trying to be served papers by a process server at the same time the calls started. It's most likely a threat from a process servers company. They are trying to serve you or a family member papers and they can't get to them. The point of the call is for you (or your family members) to realize that if whoever it is they want won't allow themselves to be served the courts will make a decision without them. The purpose of the call is for you to listen to the voicemail. It's shady and I'm pretty sure it falls into the realm of being illegal. They are depending on the fact that it will be taken as a scam call and the numbers they call on and leave are fakes. A person can't be intimidated into taking legal documents. These people get arrogant and think they are above the law. Its a form of intimidation which process servers themselves may never do. If your family's not sure about who they are trying to serve check out the justice court website. You can all research civil cases there with just your name. This will at least help clarify the situation. If you can't find a case start letting everyone in your immediate circle know to check and see if it's them. Hope this helps.

Why would someone be calling your office about these phone calls?Quote:The office I work in has been getting complaints about this same number from the clients.
You don't know whether it is legal or not yet you have people calling you for advice?Quote:It's shady and I'm pretty sure it falls into the realm of being illegal. - Yakim replies to BigA| 2 repliesA better question might be why are you so interested in discrediting anyone on this thread? Other than yourself of course. Do you have a personal interest in this matter? In a more general sense, people do not call people on fake numbers unless they are typically doing something wrong. You may think well that doesn't mean its illegal. This is true. Hence the part where I mention its in the realm of being illegal. The thing here is being able to prove it.
- MikeHuntleton replies to YakimPointing out something you said and asking about it isn't discrediting. Those 2 sentences are questionable on what you meant, so instead of trying to skirt around it with an out cry of "he's picking on me", just clarify what you mean, otherwise it just looks like you are babbling nonsense.
You did come here to let others know about the call, right? So why wouldn't you clarify what you said?
Wrong. What kind of office do you work in where you know about the clients calls, but don't know how debt collections by shady 3rd party collectors operate? Process servers don't call the 'victim' and warn them they are about to be served. They don't get paid if they don't serve the documents. Most of these type calls are debt scammers attempting to intimidate/scare a victim into paying over the phone, since they are usually past the SOL and can't take the 'victim' to Court.Yakim wrote:The point of the call is for you (or your family members) to realize that if whoever it is they want won't allow themselves to be served the courts will make a decision without them.
The vague scare tactic message is designed to panic a victim into calling back.
Most debt collectors will use a certain amount of pressure to convince you to pay the debt. After all, they often don't get paid unless you pay. Be suspicious of a debt collector who uses an unusual amount of pressure to get you to pay immediately, particularly if they also use scare tactics to get you to pay right away. For example, a debt collector is scamming you if it :- threatens you with a lawsuit and tells that you can avoid the lawsuit by paying right away
- Says a Process Server or Courier is coming with papers to sign
- Threatens to call / go to your place of employment
- Insists you have been notified, served or are non-compliant via phone message(s)
- Refuses to give a company name or verifiable Contact source
- Refuses to send proof of debt via US mail
A sure sign of a debt collection scam is a collector that wants to you to pay via wire transfer or another method that can't be traced. If the payment method can't be traced, you'll have a harder time getting the authorities involved.
If the creditor sounds completely foreign, or you know you never had an account with that business, there's a chance it's a scam. Never pay a collection you don't recognize. You have the right to request written proof of the debt from the debt collector before you send payment.

Nothing was said about a "fake" number so where did that come in? You and I both know thatQuote:In a more general sense, people do not call people on fake numbers unless they are typically doing something wrong.
wasn't referring to a "fake" number. Now I also have to wonder why you stopped back? How did you know that I replied to you? My real guess is that you are not that poster.Quote:Hence the part where I mention its in the realm of being illegal. - M.W.| 1 replyI received a voicemail asking to call the 877 number that everyone on this thread is talking about back. Here's the message:
This is not a sales or a marketing call. This is a legal matter and my final attempt to contact ------. My name is----, and I'm calling from the processor's office regarding file number ---------. I am contacting you to discuss a matter that has been forwarded to my office for consideration of legal action including the filing of a lawsuit and a complaint with the court to discuss the pending actions that may be filed against you. You will need to immediately contact the firm directly handling your file. That office number is 8773817748. This is a time sensitive matter for you. If they do not receive a response, they may be forced to proceed without your participation. Again, that number to call is 8773817748. Thank you
I added dashes in the text where names or acct numbers were said just to be appropriate on here. At first I dismissed it. They were not asking for me or anyone I know. Then they called again. They called from 2 different local numbers. They ask that the 877 number be called back in the message instead of the numbers they were calling on. My number is private and I actually hardly get scam calls. So I called the 877 number. I wanted my number off whatever list or record they were calling from. It turns out the 877 number leads to what seems to be a call center. They had no clue what I was talking about though. They asked me if I was looking to buy car insurance.
I was looking through the responses here and one caught my eye. The user Yakims post. I actually have a family member who is going through a lawsuit. I do wish the user would have been a little more specific. I don't think anyone actually expected the user to state where they work. That would be absolutely insane to post something like that on this kind of site. Maybe they could have explained what kind of office it is and what people could do to get help in that kind of situation. Anyway I just wanted to share the call on here. There really isn't much other info I could find on the Internet about it. Personally, after calling the number i think it's definitely a scam of some sort. I really don't have a clue what kind of scam it actually is. If anyone else is also getting this call maybe just let it go to voicemail and not fall victim to whatever it is.- Caller: Insurance Company

- MikeHuntleton replies to M.W.After reading the message you posted from them, there is no doubt it is a debt collection outfit that clearly disobeys Debt Collection Laws.
They "car insurance" bit is typical to throw off people they know are not the ones they called, since they can see your real number in their caller id. A little common sense should tell you they don't give out a number to call about possible "filing of a lawsuit" if they are selling insurance! - HenryI was waiting on a call to be returned and made the mistake of answering a call from these people. It was a local number that popped up on my phone and I thought it was the doctors office I was waiting to hear from. Could immediately tell there was an issue with the call. When you don't confirm your name they immediately start reading from a script and trying to sound serious. Hung up and they had the nerve to call back. They left a voicemail stating an account number and saying they were a file clerk and I needed to call the 877 number. But they don't call on that number. They call on a bunch of verified local numbers that get past spam blockers. Just don't fall for this. I've been debt free for 20 years I have no bad business with anyone. In my opinion these people are con artist trying to somehow get money and information from you. Just a bunch of baloney.
