I've been getting numerous calls this past week at all hours, including 9 at night.  I answer every time, and as soon as I say "Hello" the second time, they hang up.
I called the number back, and it didn't even ring, although it said connected on my phone.  So frigging frustrated.

This is a number used by DirecTv for past due balances.  The first call is made by a automated system.  It should leave a message but sometimes doesn't.  I just talked to them and filed a complaint regarding the nobody on the other end.  This matter is now being escalated to upper management for resolution.
If you call the number back it is answered DirecTv.  Now it may be a 3rd party contracted with DirecTv to make these calls but they are still representing said DirecTv and if you have had any dealings with the company, then they can call regardless if you are on the Federal Do Not Call Registry.

This is a 3rd party caller (probably Convergys) that is contracted by DirecTv to call customers whose bill is late.  They use a auto-dialer to make the calls.  With the system it is not designed not to leave a message.  There is a logical reason for this.  It is done this way to protect your privacy.  You wouldn't want a friend or unauthorized person to know about your financial affairs would you?  I like this as it helps they be in compliance with the Fair Debt Collections Privacy Act.  It does no good for people to ask they do not call you in this forum or any similar forums.  You have to call the back and directly ask they to place you on their do not call list.  That is the only way to stop the calls.  Once you have asked them to stop calling you, if they call you after that request then they are in violation of the law and you can legally complain at that point.  Since this is probably coming from Convergys, they may also be contracted by other companies also to call about a business related matter, so the request must be made for each individual company.  So if they use the same number to call for lets say 3 different companies, you must request the do not call for each individual company.  I hope this information helps everyone that has been complaining. For folks on the do not call registry, complaining isn't going to stop this.  Everyone needs to become familiar with the laws behind the do not call registry and the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act.  This will give you a lot of EDUCATION that will help you down the road.  I know I learned a lot from it.  I recommend everyone else will become educated by reading the information stated.

RE The Old Ititator:  If you have the OLD STYLE DirecTv Box then yes your phone number will be called in order to check if there are any pay per view movies, events, etc.  If your phone line isn't connected to the box, then the system will keep calling until it actually connects with the box to get this info.  The number also calls to update your box software.  Technology has changed with thir boxes where it no longer needs a phone line, just a broadband connection.  I have a broadband connection and the newer boxes so I don't have to worry about phone calls to get the info from the boxes.  To other posters, see my other post regarding DirecTv and 3rd party companies.  More information for everyone regarding do not call lists, etc.  If you have done business with any company, then they do have the right to call until you directly tell the party verbally to add the number to their do not call list.  This will stop calls from that company but not any other companies.  Also, if you just barely got your phone number, then you will get calls looking for a different person.  You must tell them verbally that they have the wrong number and to put your number on the do not call list.  By law regarding the do not call registry, telemarketers are required to download the list every 30 days.  But not all companies do this.  There are loopholes to get around this unfortunately.  It is a uphill battle but put yourself on the DNC registry and tell people if you no longer want calls to add your number to their do not call list.  This will help somewhat but is not perfect.  Put pressure on the Federal Trade Commission to uphold and enforce the laws better.  Maybe if they this things will get better.

Every day for one month now I get a call.  They are Directv and want to prepare us for the removal of 25 stations. This is after she accused me of having an outstanding balance of $2.00.  My account is in good standing.  She would not talk to me because my husband's name is on the account.  I told her he is sick and unable to manage things then she told me her reason for calling.  I explained the messages on the internet and she said the operators are told to wait for a human being to speak to otherwise they must hang up the phone.  Good luck to everyone.

    Ridiculous
First off, you idiots that keep posting to this website to remove you from the calling list? Just how on earth do you think that is going to happen?  Think about it.  You think they are reading this thread and will honor your request?  And honor your request with what whenonly your first name posted?  Please think before you post such stupidity.

Second, the number is for DirecTv.  At some point, your telephone number was connected to a DirecTv account that is now past due.   Whether you owned the telephone number or not.  Perhaps it was the person that had the phone number before you. Or even worse, perhaps someone who insists that their privacy be respected intentionally gave DirecTv a wrong phone -- and it just happens to be yours.  Terrible that it happens, but it does.

So, bottom line? If it's a cell phone and you have no dealings with DirecTv, contact your carrier and have the number blocked.  If it's a land line and it's making you that mad? Take the few minutes to sit on the phone when you dial the number back and inform them that they have the wrong phone number.

A little common sense goes a long way......

This number called my house because we always pay about a week late. What I don't appreciate is that they have it so that the caller id shows the name as [***] on the phone. Want to know whats [***] is when they do that and my 5 year old see it and tries to read it. I think the only [***] it direct tv who will be losing my business of over 10 years and I have always paid just maybe a week late. Don't use profanity when you are calling my house.
