They called my wife threatening sue her and would come by her place of business.

They call trying to reach the former owner of my new number.  They leave messages threatening to come to my home or place of work.  They also leave a number where I can allegedly call to have a wrong number removed, but it rings once and hangs up on me every single time.  Then they call back and leave nasty messages about how I "need" to answer my phone.  When I do, they are nasty and hateful and talk to me like I'm an idiot, and say they can't remove my phone number until I tell them what it is, yet THEY CALLED ME.  They obviously know my number.

After I screamed at them for over a minute they hung up, called RIGHT BACK, and demanded again to know my number.

a female susan called our work said need to call back with id # she provide but didnt tell us what the cause of the call she was calling for  so i tried call back and you have leave message and for them to call you back by leaving your phone # .

I received a call for 2 consecutive days from an unknown number and just left a message for someone who has my last name but a DIFFERENT FIRST name.

The caller stated his name was "RICHARD NILES (sounds like it) calling from ____Verification Services (can't understand the 1st word) requesting to confirm responden'ts name, address and place of employment to forward documentation that verifies respondent's name and social security number in regard to pending litigation matter.  Be advised that we request you sign and respond to this required demand notice per federal law referencing a possible appearance date. This is to be sent to an independent service but before I schedule these documents to be forwarded out which will require your presence and signature, I am providing you with a courtesy call to inform you that the process will take place within the next 24 to 48 hours.  To request a retraction notice or if you have any questions at all, you can contact the filing party directly at 877-630-6423 with "given reference number".  Just to be clear failure to respond or contact the filing party will result in a possible default date being scheduled to further determine pursuant to your applicable state and federal laws, you officially have been notified".

I will just ignore this since the message was intended for someone else (don't even know), and not me.  Legitimate collection agencies, DO provide you with details of the debt (original creditor) possibly on the message, even though they're not supposed to leave any detailed message on the phone unless they've confirmed and received approval from the intended party.  Just common sense, no one will give you a very short notice (24-48 hours) to act on a legal matter.  The severity of the legal matter requires a written notice and not just over the phone.

In the past, I had someone left me a detailed message almost same as the above, but the caller did provide the name of the original creditor which I was fully aware of.  I called the call back number and found out that the owner of this number is a legitimate debt collector.  I asked the debt collector rep questions to verify the debt legitimacy (orig. creditor's name, type of debt, amount). She was professional and nice.  The original caller works for another entity which does the calling in behalf of the collection agency.  

MY ADVICE: know if the message is legitimate and valid by asking yourself these questions:  Did they leave the message or ask for YOU (the same first and last name)?, Do you owe the debt they're seeking to be repaid?, Do you recognize the creditor's name?, When you call the callback number, does the person who answer the call sound professional (ex. mentions his/her name and the name of the company)?
