- able| 1 replyscammers have become more sophisticated. check out posts for 877-630-6498. didn't say a name but said from asset verification services. they wanted to verify my employment and something else and claimed to have my name and soc number, but the hilarious thing is they called me by the wrong name in the vmx.
in the real word, to be served for a law suit, it is done in person or by publication! nobody calls you!
even though i knew this was a scam it still rattled me.
if the scammers put that much effort into something productive, imagine how successful they could be.- Caller: asset verification services

- almost trickedI got a message today directing me to call 1-877-630-6498 regarding a pending litigation. They did have my name, and said they have my SS number, and said that I needed to call within 24-48 hours before they would take further action. It freaked me out!!! I do have some debts but glad I looked up the number to verify. It was strange because I never got served any legal papers. Debating on calling the number back and finding out what they'll say on the phone.

- LVI got a private call around 11:30-40am, so did my mom, and so did my dad, all around the same time, only he got the vm. I listened to it, addressed to me, with the SAME "script": "asset verification, we received your file today with name and SS#, we must verify place of employment..." They spoke A LOT of legal terms, don't get tricked, it's a SCAM!

- Beside Myself| 5 repliesThis was the voice-mail message that I received (showed up as unknown # on caller ID): "Hello this message is for ---"shocking to hear this name"----. This is Eileen with Asset Verification Services. I'm calling to confirm your address and place of employment. I was forwarded documentation today that verifies your name and social security number in regards to a pending litigation matter. Please be advised that I have a request for you to sign and respond to. This required demand notice is per federal law, and it does reference a possible pending appearance date. Now this is to be sent through an independent service, so before I schedule the documents to be forwarded out, which will require your presence and signature, I wanted to provide you this courtesy call and to inform you that the scheduling process will begin within the next 24-48 hours. To request a retraction notice or with any questions you need to address this with your filing party directly; their number is 8776306498, and the claim number issued for you is: 50502537. Just to be clear, failure to contact the following party will result in a possible default date being scheduled with further determinations pursuant to all physical state and federal laws. You have been officially notified."
I called the # given back because I,"The person Beside Myself" has been legally divorced from --"shocking to hear this name"--- since October 2001. (Yes, 2001.) HE & I Have had NO communication, contact, or otherwise since. THIRTEEN YEARS I have been distancing myself for my well-being & safety from him- trying to move forward with my life. HOW this Scam Company/ Agency got MY new new new new cell# completely perplexes, upsets, angers, & potentially endangers my welfare. I am registered with the national donotcall registry website andI give out the # sparingly to trusted associates & agencies. I DO NOT use social media, texting, apps or the like- IT IS STILL A NOKIA 6010 cell phone! It is an absurd violation of data collection that 3rd party vendors somehow obtained MY cell# after 13yrs AND in connection with my Ex-husband. I called the # again upon filing complaints on https://complaints.donotcall.gov/ and https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, to garner more info on the company- the woman would not provide her name or title, would only say the company's name was M&F, would not give me an address, and refused to provide me with any information about the company unless I provided MY NAME and social security number- as she wanted to know why I was contacting the company if I had no business doing so; at which point she hung up on me. I urge anyone else who is harassed by these scam artists who troll for information on those money-making, public record/ background people search websites to also take the time to register with the national do not call registry, and file complaints to both donotcall.gov and the Federal Trade Commission. Why should people be making money off of buying-and-selling our info that's apparently SO easily gathered from public records that are nearly decades old??!!!!- Caller: Asset Management Services
- Mike-in-MD replies to Beside MyselfWhile you are justified in being outraged that somehow they were able to access information that connected you to your ex and connect that with your new phone number, you should know that the Do Not Call registry does not apply to debt collection calls. It applies solely to sales calls or calls qualifying you as a sales prospect for a third party. This information is readily available on the DNC website. The sad part is that there is so much personal information that we have to provide to various entities such as our employers that end up in searchable databases without our knowledge that it is nigh on impossible to prevent them from finding out what they did.
You were correct though to file a complaint with the FTC as this call has all the appearances of an illegal debt collector. No legal notification can ever be provided by being left on an answering machine since there is no way to verify the intended recipient received it and the information they left appears to violate Federal law governing debt collection since such details as were left cannot be shared with a third party without permission.
If you told them to stop calling you about this issue and the calls continue, you should seek legal assistance in getting them to stop. - OliveSame comments as beside myself.

- suspiciousReceived 2 calls 5 minutes apart, caller ID said "unavailable" and the 2nd call from 000-000-0000. The vm asked for my husband's daughter with her married name who doesn't nor has ever lived with us. It was the same exact message that other people who have also been called. Obviously a scam! So glad for caller ID and websites such as this to verify these stupid calls from dishonest devious people.
- 'Grave' Voices?I too, received VM earlier today with the exact message as 'Beside Myself'.
I won't be calling them back because
I don't know WHAT they want with my deceased spouse (since 2012), and don't plan on letting them know anything.
So, evidently they have his SS# from somewhere but, guessing they didn't take time to see if it was in SSA database as deceased!- Caller: Asset Mgmt Srvcs

My caller ID had the number as "restricted" so I was unable to verify the caller

I Am blocking this number.

- BigA replies to mary aFYI. SOL applies only to the time they have to sue you not on attempting to collect the debt (unless precluded by state law of which there are 2 states if I remember correctly):
This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt. One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying. They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
List of State AG’s offices: http://consumerfraudreporting.org/stateattorneygenerallist.php - Kirkland, WA residentLeft a vm (actually using my mother's name, not mine), claiming that she/me had assets to verify and process for "enforceable review". If you actually listen to what they say, they don't really say anything, they just use big words like "enforceable".
- not amused| 1 replyThis was left on my anwering machine....Hello, this message again is intended to reach xxxxx. My name is xxx with Asset Verification Services. I'm calling again today to confirm your address and place of employment. As I stated in my prior message the documentation that I was forwarded does verify your name and Social Security number. Now I still have this request for you to sign for and respond to the required demand notice per federal law, which of course will require your presence and signature at one of the addresses I have on file for you. Now due to this possibly referencing an appearance date and that I haven't heard any differently, that scheduling process does begin today. Now you still have the opportunity to contact your filing party to request a retraction notice or with any questions. Their number again is 1(877) 630-6498 and the claim number issued is xxxxx. Otherwise failure on your part to contact the filing party will force the delivery of these documents to an independent service in your local county, and may result in them making further determinations pursuant to applicable state and federal laws. And xxxxx you have been officially notified for the final time.
Then I recieved a call from someone I know..telling me they had been contacted by them and was to relay a message.- Caller: unknown was about Asset Verification
- Alfalfa replies to not amusedHow can I verify whether or not a debt collector is legitimate?
Here are a few warning signs that could signal a debt collection scam:
The debt collector threatens you. Legitimate debt collectors probably won't claim that they'll have you arrested or claim that they or their employees are law enforcement officers.
The debt collector refuses to give you information about your debt or is trying to collect a debt you do not recognize. You have certain rights to ask a debt collector to verify the debt. You can use this sample letter to request this information. Ask for an explanation in writing before you pay.
The debt collector refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number.
The debt collector asks you for sensitive personal financial information. You should never provide anyone with your personal financial information unless you are sure they're legitimate.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.
Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.
Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know the company or person you are talking with is a real debt collector. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft such as:
Charging your existing credit cards
Opening new credit card or checking accounts
Writing fraudulent checks
Taking out loans in your name
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Submit a complaint with the CFPB or get in touch with your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers.
Stop speaking with the caller. If nothing else works and you believe the calls are fraudulent, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files.
Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).
http://www.consumerfinance.gov/ - IH8SCAMMERSThey have apparently discovered a site, of which there are many, that list all family members whether divorced, living together, etc., as one big link, and lists present and prior telephone numbers. I myself have found myself listed on the site occasionally, and this is the way they can grab multiple family members phone numbers all at one time and call THEM at the same time they call YOU so that everyone panics at the same time and it appears to be a legitimate debt collection. They hope to panic the entire family and annoy them so that THEY also call you telling you that you are being look for because you must owe money. Now they have the whole family tellung you to call so they themselves stop getting harassed! I myself got the call but it was for a divorced spouses name from over a decade ago, just block this number as well as your lical number they called you from, in my case was 321-319-1461.
