They called the number where I live but it is someone else's number and not mine. According to other people they belong to 'Hunter Warfield' a shady collection company. They keep calling every night judging from the voice messaging. They may or may not have business with me but the number they call? No.

Not sure how they respond if I call since I never call unknown callers.

Unfortunately  DC's automatically consider the person a liar. You will need to send a cease & desist letter via certified or return receipt mail. Keep all messages, and record any conversations with them. Keep a notebook handy and also consult the recording laws for your state, some require you inform them while others do not. Follow the steps in what you need to know.

    Annoyed
Received a call from this number, they left an automated message stating "this is not a sales or marketing call. This message is for _______  _______.  Please call us back at 877-630-7138 and refer to reference #_________." They do no identify themselves nor say the purpose of the call. Sneaky & underhanded tactics. If they are truly a collections agency they should just be up front. If people are going to ignore you, they're going to do it whether you identify yourself or not (More so if you don't).  I called the number, and since it was after their business hours, I got the voicemail. Once again, the voicemail did not state who the company was or their purpose. It just said to leave my name, number and reference number and then they'll get back to me.  I find the fact that their so secretive about their name extremely shady. A professional & proper company, no matter their purpose, wouldn't be so sneaky.  I had to come online to search the number to figure out its origin, no one should have to do that if the company is legit....

I totally agree that if the company is legit, that it should identify itself as such.
As a prior IRS tax auditor, identification is key to getting a response back.
When unidentified numbers and "short generic messages" appear, who in there right mind would pick up and then answer back??? With so much fraud and ID theft, the right thing to do would to ignore. However,  IF they left a little more of the "reason" and "purpose" of the call, maybe there wouldn't be so many pissed off individuals, and there response time would be much greater.
    just saying...
