The extortionist types at issue here are known to avoid sending the required "G-letter" which opens the validation response window. They are also known to obfuscate and withhold their locations, frustrating people who want a paper trail. But it doesn't hurt to ask when they'll get around to sending paperwork, just to see if the lies and stupid threats pile on.

We should clarify that no one needs to wait for an outright threat before suing a debt collector. Lack of disclosure and/or misleading statements are enough. Mere failure to send that dunning letter creates liability, as would lying about sending it, as would making up cheap excuses for noncompliance. (A lawyer is not needed by every plaintiff either, but that's another essay.)

I have a different posture from your first sentence. If I demand validation I have to reveal my name and contact data to preserve my rights. That's information the crumbs already have or can easily find. On the phone I might be more guarded about my identity, depending on the caller. In no case, I agree, should one ponder an amount owed or ask how to pay or cry poverty. The focus is all on the collector's behavior, not any of my alleged sins.

My sister received a call claiming they were looking for me for an unpaid debt.  Caller didn't leave a name but claimed they have attempted to serve me twice and both were returned unclaimed.  She also stated that if I didn't return their call today they're going to come out and serve me papers, with the police, for a hearing next week.

Got a call from Lynn @ 877.771.6856 stating I had a balance due on an old debt (over 5 years ago), and I must make my first payment immediately or I will be served with a summons at my job.  I told her I was pretty sure it wasn't legit, so I'm not making any arrangements today. So she said "well, you better have 2 proofs of identification tomorrow when they show up at your job to serve you, and you'll have to go to court".

Also, she asked for me by a last name I haven't had in almost 10 years - sorry, don't have any ID's with THAT name, guess you can't serve me!

I just received a v/m from an Ashley with Outward Processing Services saying she was giving me a "courtesy call" to let me know they are serving me a summons for a civil complaint at my work and home in a city I don't even live in anymore. She said I could call 877-771-6856 to settle the matter before she comes out to "serve me tomorrow".  Funny thing is, she said "serving you here in Chattanooga" and at the end of the call she said "and remember, this is a courtesy call that is not required by Ohio state law". Wait, last time I checked, Chattanooga is in TN!!!  lol  SCAMMERS!
