You didn't even read that post you replied to, did you?
Never trust a caller to be who they claim, always call from an official number to verify if they did call. - PpP| 1 replyIf it is legit... it sure isn't very professional. SS says any number not listed there is not them and to not reply, yet they use an undocumented external number to call out? Uh huh. If not a scam, it's either incredibly stupid or an insidously scummy method to get people rejected. All of which does seem about right for a government program of course... so I don't know what to think.
- Caller: Social Security
- PpP Update replies to PpPSo after a 5 hour wait on the official SS line for a 5 minute conversation... turns out this number was legitimately who they say they are. So, "incredibly stupid" wins the day.
- liza1This is legit. I was very hesitant to call back, but it was just fine. I answered a few questions. Since I'm filing under my husband's work record they also needed him to answer some questions. Since he wasn't home, they will send a form in the mail so he can provide the info they need. The worker had given his extension number so I used that to connect directly. He told me amount of benefits, starting date, and start of Medicare coverage.

- gcl| 5 repliesDO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME CALLING BACK (877) 772-4300 OR (877) 772-4309..... THIS IS A SCAM/PHISHING PHONE CALL!! A "Ron Simms" called from "Social Security in Kansas City" (Lie #1...Social Security processes certain claims from St. Louis, MO or your local ssa.gov office, and only lists these official phone numbers: 800-772-1213 or 1-800-325-0778, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday), but when asked for his employee identification number he ("Ron Simms") said he didn't have one (Lie #2...because ssa.gov employees do have employee ID numbers). He gave four bogus phone numbers (Lie #3...877-772-4300, 877-772-4309, 816-936-3000, and 816-936-4441--I quickly pulled up the https://www.ssa.gov website [Note: "https" in the URL website address search - note the "s" at the end of "https"--it means a secure website, versus a mere "http".....I verified that no Social Security Office number begins with any of these area code prefixes or lists these ten or seven digit phone numbers). He said he was going to process my social security application (Lie #4...because I have already completed my applications a very long time ago). AGAIN, THIS IS A SCAM!

- Peggy replies to gclI got a call from "Brandon"..... he said the same thing to me
- Barbara877-772-4309 is a legitimate phone number for the Social Security Administration Work Support Unit in Kansas City. Be aware, however, that any phone number can be spoofed. I would recommend that if you or someone that you know has a claim pending and you get a call from this number that you do not answer any questions. Instead, request their name and extension number so that you may immediately call them back. I would then call the 877-772-4309 number and select the option to enter the extension number directly. Then you will be confident you are giving your private information to a legitimate SSA representative.

- Andy replies to i know you. It’s interesting to see the variety of posts here, especially the scammers infiltrating the message board with their own incorrect and shady posts. Be careful everyone. Call Soc Sec only at 800-772-1213 or your local office.
- JS replies to Dr Who| 1 reply🤦🏻♀️ I work for SSA. This is the number for the Pwrkload Support Unit located in Kansas City Missouri that processes internet applications.
- Js replies to gcl| 3 repliesUgh this is not a scam. I work for SSA. I work on the floor that uses this number in the Federal Building in downtown Kansas City. This isn’t an office the public goes into as it is the Workload Support Unit that processes applications placed on line. We process way more than those submitted in kc and St. Louis. We also process Ohio, New Mexico, Virginia, Rhode Island, Iowa, and Nebraska. Submitting an application and an application being processed are 2 entirely different things.
- Js replies to JSSorry spelling error— workload support unit
- Tygerkat replies to Js| 2 repliesShill alert! Go ahead, tell me I'm wrong. Explain why you bothered to look up your own phone number. Besides, everyone knows the SSA doesn't initiate contact by phone, they send mail.
- JS replies to Tygerkat| 1 replyCause I’ve had people try to tell me it’s a scam so I look it up. If you have filled out an application. For anything and read it all you will see where it says at the end..SSA might contact you by phone for further information. Contact is only initiated when there is a pending application. IRS doesn’t do contact by phone. If contact is not made by SSA then mail is sent.
- Tygerkat replies to JSThe smart thing to do instead would be to contact the Social Security Administration at a known phone number and ask them. You'll get differing opinions anywhere else.
- Fran replies to Dr WhoIt is not a scam. Stop trying to scare people. Their reps call after an application is made online. I almost had a panic attack until I got through to as live person!
- Fran replies to E BrownIt is legit number. Someone would have sent their name and number after the application or reason you contacted them. They follow up to process the info you submit. They also leave a message when they call. They don't just hang up.
- Fran replies to KateIt's legit. It is a long wait to talk to anyone but eased my mind. Not a scam!
- Peter S.This is a legitimate Social Security Number. They called to verify a claim. I was asked to call back on 877-772-4309 with an extension number. Instead I called back on the main, listed number and was eventually put in touch with the person calling from 877-772-4309. The people at the main number do not have a list of all the possible phone numbers social security might be calling from so they could not verify the 4309 number. Calling back directly would have saved some time but I get a lot of scam calls so it was worth calling back on main number
