Claims to be a lawyer with a wage garnishment against you. Will show up at your work and you will need your  manager there to serve asa witness.

SCAM - garnishment is done by court order - you would have had a hearing before a judge.  BOCK this liar & crook.  It is also illegal to claim to be an attorney if not licensed.

I received a call from (supposedly) my county's "processing unit." The caller said this law firm has a "notice of lien" against me and I needed to call this firm TODAY. It's not true. A scam.

Did they ever show?  I got a strange call saying the same.

The fake process server/location finder extortion attempt usually consists of the following:

They mention that they have received a Fax document or some sort of complaint and that there is a pending legal matter or action about to filed against you to create the sense of urgency.  They tell you that they are a “process server” and cannot give you the particulars of the case since the file is sealed. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number (often with a made-up case number) where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  They threaten to serve you at home or at work.  They tell you that if they serve you at work then they will need a supervisor, security, or HR person there as a witness, hoping that will cause you to panic over the alleged embarrassment of being served at work.  They also tell you that you will need two forms of ID.  None of which is true.  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.  They certainly are not going to pass up a paycheck by telling you that you can avoid being served, they are not going to give you an extra day or even a few hours to get a “stop order”.  Court documents are time sensitive and must be served within a certain amount of time.  Remember that you can always call the local courthouse to see if there really is a lawsuit that has been filed against you.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.  

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.  If and when you get that letter you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

The call actually came from a rogue in state number. 877-790-0193 is number they tell you to call. I was secretly hoping this was a legit call since the voice message said it was for my ex's ex. They even mention HER street address! How my number is associated with that woman is more worrisome than any wage garnishment! lol

Same here... they are calling on behalf of Calhoun County Processing Unit and they have a summons for me to appear at Calhoun County someone will come to my residence or work on Dec 17 between 1200-4pm to sign paperwork with a document which is attach to my SSN.

Ya called me from a local 313 number to call the 877 number that I have a appointment for the 18th that they will be there to show my ID think I might call them back and mess with them since I'm on down time lmao

This number is listed on Hanson, Brown & Associates (https://hansonbrown.com). Simplistic and scammy looking.

A supposed process server left message saying they were serving me in 2 days between the 12-4pm. Gave me this 877 number to call. Process servers don’t call ahead and don’t want you to resolve the matter, they get paid to serve you. I called 877 number and they are not a legit law firm, or they wouldn’t answer “legal dept”. The “process server” and “law firm” are one in the same...bill collector.

Just recieved the same voicemail about 20 mins ago

I received this exact voicemail, stating it was my counties dispatch office for civil matters. It was not I of course looked up every number possible relating to my local courts and no match. I was given the 877 number to call back, I am waiting for a return call so I can make them aware that I am not a fool and I know how debt collections work. Total scam.

I received a voicemail from a fake local number stating that they are from the Suffolk County processing unit and I will be served in two days with the first attempt at my job and the second attempt at my home and they listed my home address. They said the name of the filing law firm is Hanson, Brown & Associates, phone # 877-790-0193. I tried calling the law firm but it rang with no answer. I tried the other two numbers listed on their suspicious looking website and again, no answer. I tried again and this time I received three “this number is not valid” messages. I figured it was a scam but called the local civil court to make sure and they have nothing in their system with my name or the law firm’s name.

Later in the day I decided to try the “law firm” again. This time all three numbers rang and went to voicemail. I noticed that each outgoing message had a different name but the same voice.
