Citibank on behalf of credit card late payments

called twice today

Citibank calling about a late payment

I received a call from this number saying that my payment was past due on my Citibank American Airlines credit card that had applied for in December 2023. I informed her that I never applied for the credit card. I was transferred to the fraud department which took 20 minutes. When I told the woman in fraud that I didn't have an American Airlines credit card and I would like to know what address the bill had been mailed to. She said that she wasn't authorized to give out that information and that she would need to transfer me to her superior. After 15 minutes of not being able to connect me to her superior she said that I should call them back at the number on the credit card in 30 minutes. Again I said that I don't have a credit card and even if I did, they initiated the call, they know my name and telephone number and when your superior is available they can call me. At that point she mumbled something unintelligible and hung up.  Is this a scam? Not sure. Is this a totally incompetent? Emphatically YES.
