It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Read up on your rights here and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

The call is legit - it's medical bill collections.  They never leave a voicemail.  The # they call you from 877-855-8844 is a good # to call someone back.

Called but did not leave a message. I called back and the woman said company was FCI. She asked for my phone address and birthdate .... strange combination. I asked what type of company this was and she asked me to verify mu address which i did since she already knew my name. I asked again for the nature of the call and she said no more info until i confirm my identify. I could either confirm or end call .... i hung up and added to my blocked numbers.

In addition to what I previously posted (you did read that didn't you?).

You will need to send them a certified, return receipt debt validation (by law they have to go back to the original creditor to prove you owe the debt), cease and desist calling, or "not me" letter (this will be the best money that you have ever invested).  Also send it first class mail in case no one will sign for it.  Make a notation of that fact at the bottom of the letter.  You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to.  Then you need to go out and get a consumer lawyer to sue them on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket) and let them pay you for the harassment.  If everyone did these three things, these crooks would be bankrupt and we would all be the richer for it.  Use these web sites to find an attorney in your state that will probably take the case on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket up front):  http://www.consumeradvocates.org/

    Good person
Just received a call.  Left no message.  Based on what I'm reading here, I'm guessing I owe CLE Clinic something, but - part of the drawback of paperless billing is the potential to not receive your doctor bills... There's probably a bill I missed via email, and I don't log into their site unless I need to.  Looks like I will need to check there tonight, as I always do pay my medical bills.

Do what I did.  If they wont answer you or do what they are supposed to do, then report them to FCC complaint department.  That worked.

I have asked the droning dull man on the other side of the phone to give me more information on what 'FCI' is, even what the abbreviation is, and he stalls and doesn't give an answer. He kept pushing for me to verify my information & I told him that a young woman should not give personal information over the phone to someone right off the bat. He was very very pushy.
