- Harrassed replies to Regina| 5 repliesCalled DOZENS of times on all the lines at my place of employment. I conferenced in with the local police and they insulted the officer. Totally bogus claim that I owe $$ to a cash advance company. I filed a claim with the FTC and so did my boss.
- irritatedI received a call from 1-877-888-2223 and a message was left telling me a serious criminal report was filed against me in Florida (I live in Missouri). The message was long, almost 2 minutes, and advised me to return the call to avoid a serious affect on my credit report. It was threatening, to the point that the man said, "If you do not call back, all I can tell you is good luck." I have no idea what this call was about, but it seemed totally wrong and fake to me and I don't appreciate aggressive messages.

- Secret SquirrelFake Debt Collectors and Collection Tactics
If consumers did not have enough to worry about having to deal with rising credit card interest rates, late fees and over-limit fees, zombie debt, and fervent bill collectors, now we have to worry about collectors calling about fake debt.
While many legitimate collection agencies follow the FDCPA, there are some collectors out there that are only running a scam operation and will be quick to use threats and scare tactics to get you to pay up quick. Their scams turn up in mailboxes, on the internet and through the telephone every day. Some collectors pose as national banks, government agencies (FBI, CIA), or even popular celebrity stars to gain personal information. These phony collectors may threaten to repossess your house, issue a warrant for your arrest, or even garnish your pay check, all of which are against the FDCPA rules. Some of which are even laughable (for example, there is no debtor’s prison in the United States).
Fake debt scammers rely on the fear and lack of knowledge about debt collection laws within the population. They also figure that a certain percentage of their calls will be received by individuals who may be carrying debt on credit cards anyway and may be susceptible to intimidation. When collectors use misleading statements and fail to provide identification, they are breaking the law. Never pay money to a possible thief. Keep cool when you hear from collectors to avoid this collection abuse.
Many times, people who took out payday loans online in the past are most susceptible. If you took a payday loan, be aware scammers may have access to your Social Security number and other personal information, and keep your guard up against such tactics.
Ironically, real "deadbeats" probably wouldn't fall for these scammers, since they have no intention of repaying their creditors anyway. But upright citizens may doubt themselves, thinking they've forgotten to pay a bill. Many times, the sums involved tend to be fairly small, so some people may be tempted to just pay the "bill" and "get it over with."
Ways to Protect Yourself Against Debt Collection Scams
Review your credit report frequently to find inaccuracies.
Be aware of your current creditors and how much you owe.
Ask creditors for identification before you provide any information over the telephone.
Reporting Fake Debt Collectors
If you ever receive a call from anyone identifying himself as a debt collector, the law requires that the debt collector provide you with identification, and that the debt collector refrain from making misleading and threatening statements.
You can report any problems you have to your state Attorney General’s office www.naag.org and the Federal Trade Commission www.ftc.gov. Many states have their own debt collection laws that are different from the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Your Attorney General’s office can help you determine your rights under your state’s law.
http://www.internetautoguide.com/credit-cente ... on-tactics.html - Beware of Morgan and AssociatesNumber will show up as 877-888-2223 or 0000. Caller states they are Peter Johnson (who does have a foreign accent) and then the next time he calls he will tell you he is Jeff Morgan the attorney and supervisor to Peter Johnson; however, the voices are exactly the same. The back ground sounds like the Jerry Lewis telethon phone center. When I asked for an address to send a certified letter to requesting information about the money they are trying to collect, they became verbally abuse. They are very disrespectful and will not listen to you. They have threatened to have me arrested at my home. They have said to me "if you do not pay this, all I can say is good luck to you". They are calling my boss and leaving messages about me, they call my home and they even my cell phone. I have looked extensively on the internet about them and it is a scam. Do not fall prey to them.

- Ticked Off replies to Harrassed| 3 repliesThis guy called himself Peter Johnson with the Federal Legislative Department. He was calling our employee at work several times. I want to make a complaint with the FTC. How did you go about it? Please and thank you for a reply.
- Ticked OffCalls multiple times at our employees home and work. Gives the name Peter Johnson with the Federal Legislative Department (he has a foreign accent and is very hard to understand). Gives the 877-888-2223 number to call back or to have the employees attorney call back. Never says what the call is about but threatens "do not disregard this call or all I can say is"....and then there is silence for a few seconds and he returns to repeat his number again. The number that comes over on caller ID when he doesn't block his number is (991) 279-9100. It's a scam. Our supervisor ripped him a new "you know what" and I'm about to do the same if he calls back again.

- Harrassed replies to Ticked Off| 2 repliesLook up the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) web site. You can either file a claim over the phone or online. They take the info but do not necessarily investigate until there are multiple calls about the same caller, so please EVERYONE that has had to deal with these jerks -- call in a claim!!!

- LakeitaAdam Ryan called my job and left a message stating that he is calling from the Federal Legislative Department he left the call back number 1877-888-2223 to call back. - Carolyn BrooksReceived a call from this number from a Mr. Anthony Jones. He said He was from the Federal Government and he was collecting a debt which I owed to a payday loan company. I actually pretended not to be me in an attempt to see how much information I could get from him, however, to no avale. He kept asking for me or my office manager and when I refused to let him talk to my manager, he called continuously on our office phone until I got tire and started calling his number back every time he called me. I even pushed buttons on the phone when he would call; and, eventually, he stopped calling. However, he has called daily for at least a week now and I've refused to talk to him or give him any information at all.
Something really needs to be done about these companies. They make consumers like me not want to pay anyone even if I do owe them. Thanks for this forum.- Caller: Federal Legislative Department

- Young and stupidThis number has been calling my old employer, and some relatives for the past few months. They finally left a message with my mom. I was supposed to call Adam Ryan, when I called they sent me to a Jeffery Morgan. He told me I owed a debt. I talked to Jeffery Morgan last night, he said I had to pay 974.00 by the end of the night, or a bench warrant would be issued and I would have a felony. I'm only 22 and almost finished with school to become a teacher, and have a new born that I'm fighting his father over custody issues. Needless to say, FELONY, is not a good thing for me to have on my record, so I sent them the money. Thankfully I didn't give them a credic card number like they wanted, they let me send in Money Gram express. Then I thought about it and thought it sounded kida fishy, looked up the number, and found this site. I feel so STUPID! These people had my SS number and everything. I called FTC this morning and reported it to them, with my money gram reference number, and who I sent it to and everything. Then I also called Money Gram, and hopefully they are performing an investigation to get my money back. If they call you and have your SS number, go to your local police station, or court house, you can fill out an identity theft paper that will put a block on any debt collection, if they accept it, until the matter is resolved, also you can have them put a block so no one can apply for any kind of credit using your social securtiy number without providing proper identification. It may be an inconvenience in the future, but it's going to protect you now, who knows what these people are capable of.

- Lisa replies to LauraComments like "If you do not pay . . ." or threatening to arrest people is very much against the FDCPA. As is calling a person's workplace after being told not to. So is failing to provide information so that a person may request in writing validation of their debt. So is calling multiple times a day. All of these offenses occur a $1000 claim for the person you are harassing for EACH of the offenses.
Hopefully your victims will record each phone call and contact an attorney. I'm sure they wouldn't mind the extra cash your law breaking will bring them if they sue. - msthunderThis Malcolm person has been calling my job harassing me and my co-workers. We have told him numerous of times to stop calling. We told him he would be reported to the BBB. So, I will report him to the FTC. Because they don't seem to understand they can be sued for calling you on your job.

- Melissa replies to MEOSHEThis is the same thing happening to me!!!! From Anthony Jones, and last week he said his name was tony jones. He just called my cell phone 5 times in a row in the last 5 mintues. I dont know what to do, except tell them if they have legal issues against me to have me served and I will take it to my lawyer, he said he has crimial charges against me and that he is sending the police after me. This is so frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!
- MelissaJust filed a complaint with the FTC. She stated that this was clearly a scam, and not to correspond with them at all. I advise anyone who is recieiving calls from this company to contact the FTC. This company needs to know that they cannot harrass and threaten people like this.
