This is a scam....They called me from 866-267-8842 claiming to be from Scotiabank and not a sales call....then asked me to call them back at 877-972-6842.
Neither number shows up on Scotiabank's official website.

Well after the 4th message they left for me to call them back at this number I was feeling cheeky and figured I would call back and give them a hard time... it's not a scam, I have a Scotia mortgage coming due in 6 months and they are trying to get me to early renew.... and they probably have someone who works for them who wants to quit his job...

Just got the same call. I called Scotia Bank using number found on their site. Gave them the employee ID of the representative who called me first. Turns out he is a real employee and he noted in my file that I was going to call them back. So it's NOT a scam.

Fake # claiming to be Scotiabank.
The real Scotiabank # is an 800 number not an 877, and it’s 472, not 972.
    Fake 1-877-972-6842
    Real  1-800-472-6842

Only one person on here has indicated this to be a legit call from Scotia, and in that situation it was regarding mortgage renewal.  Interestingly, we received a call from a lady who knew the name of the person here that would be affected by their call, and more interestingly it is around the time of our mortgage renewal.  But anyone with illegal access to your credit report would know that too.

So as standard practice, when in doubt about an authentic phone number, call the main number you find from their website, and ask about the number left to you.  Keep in mind, large call centers, distributed globally, do not always have a full list of toll free numbers so even if they say it is not a legit number, it may still be.  But regardless the obligation is on the person phoning to figure out a way to reach you if phone calls don't work and these days phishing by phone is the same as by email - someone's trying to get you to reply and provide something of value that they can use for fraud, so if they can't meet your need to ensure they are authentic, they have no right to get mad or penalize you ("like, we tried to reach you several times, but your lack of response means your payment is past due").

If they fail to reach you through authenticated methods such as a call from your bank's home branch, ignore them.  Plus, they should know better anyway, if they were a legit caller.

"Hi this is Scotiabank calling" is not a traceable name so ignore it when people do this.  And if they do leave their name, contact the actual company using their website's phone number, and try to get someone to transfer you to this person's extension or voicemail so you can hear their voice and match it to what you heard on the message left to you.  There's a chance of error here since two voices can be alike and fraudsters aren't above fooling you by using people with similar voices to those of the real thing.  Remember their goal is to make their efforts seem believable because that nets a higher profit from more people being fooled, so don't be an idiot and assume this stuff is just for the movies.  The ignorance of the general public is why this stuff keeps working.

They just called me claiming to be from Scotiabank.  They would not tell me what the call was about before me providing sensitive information.  When I stated I suspected this was a telemarketer and asked them for a number that I could verify - they provided me with 877-972-6842
A Google search's first result was this scam forum.
