Received a message from Sydney Brown.  I was notified that certified documents for an individual who is not me needs to be signed for.  Gave this number as the "law firm" handling the case, and even provided a case number.  Absolutely no other specifics.

Received a call from "Cortney" from a blocked phone number, which left me a message that she was calling from "Service Dispatch out of Los Angeles County" 2 attempts will be made to issue out certified legal documents ... blah blah blah.  This is a SCAM.  No legitimate company blocks their phone number when attempting to call you first of all. Second, I haven't lived in the state for over 3 years. third, No business shows up as "Service Dispatch of Los Angeles County".  Definite scam

877-992-1163... this number called my phone, and my son’s phone saying that I was going to be served papers and I’m being sued for 10k from a credit card company named Washington Mutual .  They told me that Chase had brought the account and that I needed to pay this debt.  I never heard of the credit card before and knew that I did not have this card.  The caller said his name was Michael Brantley and he was from Harris County process service center and he was an attorney office representing the client.  He asked me if I would consider settling out of court.  Again, call showed up u known and just seemed too suspicious.

That bank was purchased years ago.  No doubt they would let you "settle" for hundreds.  This is a debt collection extortion scam.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.  If and when you get that letter you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file complaints with the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

A "solicitor"?  What is this person flying over from England?  Lawyers are called, well lawyers or attorneys in the US.  They do not make house calls to collect debts.  They send letters or they file a complaint at the county courthouse and have you served according to the local Rules of Civil Procedure.  If you are being "sued" then you should be able to call the courthouse up and ask them.  I bet they don't even know what a solicitor is.
