A letter came with this phone number on it saying it is from ssi office in chicago, and that I owe them $3000 , however I have no affiliation with chicago or the state they say I owe money to.

Never gave name of law firm but claims they are in Maryland. He Gave my previous name from 21 years ago and my present married name and my social security number.  Stated I was in serious trouble and owed on a Discover Card. Do not verify Social Security Number it’s a scam!!  He said a letter will be sent and demanded I go to court, I hung up after that.

I received a letter from this SSA indicates I owe 19000.

From other posts, this sure looks like a scam. Easy to check. Call Social Security and ask them. I think you will find the letter is fake.
Save the letter and the envelope, you can take these to your post office and report mail fraud.

Do NOT trust this 888 phone number. From the Social Security Admin website:

This number should also be where you would start if you are on Social Security Disability.

recieved a letter saying i was overpaid by ssi to the tune of $10,690. they said to send a check to portland, oregon., or i could pay by phone 1-888-231-3939 . i do not live in oregon.

What does you not living in Oregon have to do with this? Government offices that take payments are not located in every town. If you don't believe me check out your 1040 the next time you fill one out and see where the payments are supposed to go.
