Got a call they were taking me to court about a credit card I had in 1999. Said charge off balance was $2,000 but I now owe $6,400 due to court charges. Never had a card in 1999. Said they were sending someone to serve me papers. Person never showed.

Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.

If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

    1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
    2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
    3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  dime until the debt is validated

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.

If they are bothering you, report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a  violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.)  The same goes for endless telephone harassment

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.
You have to get tuff with these people because,  being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking),  the only thing they understand.

Received a call today stating I would be served papers as a "defendant" I was told no other information could be shared. I was given a number to call and did so. I was told during this second call that this was for lack of credit card payment. I was told that I had a credit card from 1999 to 2008 (I never owened a card then nor do I now) thrue HSBC , ive never ever done buisness with them. I was also told that I could make payment arrangements to the tune of $ 2000.00  or go to court and end up paying a maximum of $ 7000.00 . I told them this is either identity theft or a scam,I was told "good luck" then hung up on.

got a call from an unknown, to my home and my cell number. i was told the call was from a courier service and that they had legal papers to deliver on thursday. she could not give me any other details, other than a phone # to call (888-246-6855) and a case number. when i asked the address they were going to deliver the letter to, she gave me an address that is over 12 years old. I immediately contacted a lawyer, who called that number and got no response. she assured me it was a scam. I also contacted the county clerk in the county where they were going to deliver the letter to, they assured me there was no pending lawsuit.

Question, is there a company or a legal  name associated with this phone number?
