I have received three calls from a  caller who identified himself as Eric Maloney. He called from 505-933-6913, which I suspect is a spoofed number. In any case, it came up as out of area. He was calling for a person who has never lived here, nor has anyone with a similar name. He said a package would be arriving and gave 888-249-2241 as a callback number.

On the latest call, he claimed to be from ICS, which he said stood for Independent Carrier Service. I am unable to find any such company in my area.  There is, however, an ICS Financial debt collection agency. Therefore, my suspicion is that this is a fraudulent debt collection effort.

(In a separate post, I accidentally gave the claimed call back number as -2291, rather than -2241. I have requested that the post be removed and apologize for that confusion).

You are right, this could be a phony debt scammer's first move.  There are some phishing attempts that start this way as well.  Having a spoofed number and hiding the name of the "company" tells you that these are bad guys and are up to no good.  Ignoring the calls and blocking the number might be enough to get them to move along to the next victim.

Do keep records of the calls in case they keep calling and you need to take some action against them.

Definitely sounds like the process server/debt collection extortion scam to me.

One of the tricks they use is to call your family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them and they can scare that person into paying their extortion money.  They often call people that have never even been associated with you because they get erroneous information off of the internet.

Call came 234 542 0882. Caller said his name was Eric Maloney from ICS, Independent Carrier Service, calling to say he’s delivering a certified package to my home or place of employment, date and 4 hour time frame given. The he states to stop the delivery to call 888 249 2241 with a reference number. The phone number given is supposedly a company called Northeast Mediation. Which I called from a different phone. ICS is a collection Agency that uses this tactic. Contact your state Attorney General to report this.

Reported this company to Ohio AG office, this is fraudulent behavior being used by this company. A family member, at 90 years of age, told him he should be ashamed of trying to scam people. Be aware people these con artists are out there. Check your credit reports

Mine he didn't give a name he said he had papers that will be deliver on Monday never came called back again and said papers will be deliver on Tuesday between 11am to 3pm and if  I want  to stop the delivery to call 888 249 2241 with a reference number. Never had this happen before don't know if I should see a lawyer sounds like a scam . Don't know how they have a local number but being told to call a 888 number then called my mom ?
