- BA| 1 replyI got a call, again first time asking me to call an 888 number, about tax evasion. This is a scam, correct? Same as others, heavy accent, call or I'll be arested. To my knowledge, this is not how the IRS operates.
- Caller: IRS scammer
- Heinz57 replies to BAThe IRS will not call you. They send letters via US Mail. The IRS won't ask you to pay in i-Tunes cards. The IRS will not wish you "good luck as the situation unfolds". Trust yourself and your instincts - do not let a bully intimidate you by threats that are nothing but hot air (and bad breath). This is a SCAM.
Do not answer calls you don't know and never call them back. *67 does not work on toll free numbers like 888. - JEN| 1 replyCaller left a message claiming to be the IRS. Spoke with Christine, she gave me a case number, had my address, demanded money as well as threatened to arrest me
Said I owed the IRS money and when I said I was disabled and didn't have any, she threatened me not to tell anyone she called. She had a heavy accent. And I was scared she had my address and thought I would be arrested.- Caller: Claimed to be IRS officer
- GregI received a call from the same indian accent man. He asked if I had legal representation, because he was with the IRS and I am being charged with Tax Evasion and Tax Fraud. I told him that is hard to believe because I live in Memphis and work for the IRS. He asked me for my IRS ID and I asked him for his and he gave me 84012. He said we know you dont work for the IRS, and I will have federal marshalls at your house in the next 45 minutes. He continued to ask if I had an attorney and I went silent. He finally hung up the phone. Don't fall for this crap.

- LisaI never answer a call if I don't recognize the name or number. Message cuts off at the beginning. Male with heavy Indian accent threatening I will be arrested for tax fraud. Really??? I'm currently disabled. The IRS will never call you directly. You would receive a letter. Don't let anyone ever scare you or your family that you will be arrested. I don't want vulnerable people falling for this scam. If you ever get a call and are unsure, look up the number and call the IRS directly. Never call the number they leave on your voicemail.

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone. US mail only. IRS does not file lawsuits. IRS has enough administrative authority under the IRS Code and related regulations to collect all taxes lawfully due the federal government. Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter. But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. IRS has no powers of arrest as related to ordinary tax disputes. Having a deficiency in taxes owed by way of audit is NOT a crime. IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of money. IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone. IRS does not accept Green card money paks or Itunes cards or similar for payment in any case. No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments. Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement. All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
