    What Am I an Idiot?
Received a phone call from a private number. The voicemail said there were time sensitive documents being sent to my address which required an immediate call back today. She left 888-286-0950 and a "style number" in the message. I tried searching for the number online, to no avail. I called the number and asked the person who answered who they were. I think he said Carmen and Michael legal office. I asked where they were located and he became upset and said there were a number of people waiting to talk to them or something and if I would give them that style number...yada, yada, yada, I hung up.

They called my cell saying they have documents that will be sent to an old address and old employer if I don't call this number within 24 hours. Funny thing, I have a relatively new number and haven't lived at my previous address in well over a year, so somethings fishy.

Same thing has been happening to me over the last two days. But just like Negative, I've had family members called and they will not identify themselves when they leave their messages. Also, they're calling my cell and it comes up as 'No Caller ID' so I have no way to block the calls. I've had calls from two different people and they sound like they're reading from a written script.

Did you try a different call blocking app?

They call family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them and they can scare that person into paying their extortion money.

This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this,  all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying.  They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number.  Please note that process servers do not ever call ahead.  That way you can’t dodge them.

Thank you for the information because I wasn't aware a call blocking app exists. I was thinking I'd have to go through my service provider. Received another call today; each time I receive a call they always have something incorrect so I was pretty sure it's scam artists.

You are welcome.  Yes there are several for cell phones and the good news is that they are FREE!  Make sure you file reports also because it will help to build the case when they catch these crooks.
