- Charles Bigger| 1 replyMy computer appears to be locked. What to do?
- BigA replies to Charles BiggerDisconnect from the internet. Force it shutdown either through task manager or by using the power button. Start it back up, and prevent the browser from reopening the pages. Clear the cache and cookies. Run a virus and malware scan. Most likely you went to a page and one of the ads loaded that onto your computer. This is why you should always block ads and not allow pop ups without your permission. As long as you did not give them access to your computer you should be fine.
- resident of Ontario| 2 repliesI foolishly phoned this number in response to a pop-up that appeared on my computer saying I needed to phone Microsoft Windows Help at this number because my computer had been contaminated. I was on the phone with them for over an hour as they walked me through the process of "cleaning up my computer," with them having full access to my computer all the time. Aware now of the scam, I have taken in my computer for reformatting.

Windows detected porn virus, the infections detected, indicate some recent downloads on the computer which in turn has created problems on the computer. Call technical support 1-888-311-2268 and share this code B2957E to the agent to fix this.- Call type: Scam suspicion
- CyclingMy Chromebook locked. Called number and the guy claimed to be Microsoft. But Chromebook runs Android. The popup says Google Support not Micorsoft. He even called back!

- julie replies to resident of Ontario| 1 replyI did the same thing. Week later I had fraudulent charges on my ebay account and my debit card. They charged me 5 year service plan for fixing it. Then they called me back saying there was a glitch in the program and needed to get back in to fix it. They continously call me thru different numbers saying they wanted to give me a refund if they could remove the glitch. TOTAL SCAM!
- BigA replies to julieSince you allowed them into your computer you have bigger problems.
Thanks to Slim, another registered poster here and computer whiz:
Since the scammers accessed the computer, they probably did one or more of the following:
• Disabled the anti-virus software
• Added nasty malware to the computer
• Copied the Contact List (so they can spam/email your soon-to-be ex-friends)
• Copied any financial data or passwords they could find
• Compromised your ID on Facebook or other social site(s), and perhaps on shopping sites.
• "Zombied" the computer, so it would respond to THEIR commands sent via internet
• Deleted some important files
• Asked for money to repair the damage they caused
What can you do immediately after such an attack?
1. Pull the cables on the computer, or otherwise disable it, so it cannot access the internet.
2. Change ALL passwords stored on the computer.
3. Run FULL malware scans on the computer, in "SAFE" mode!
4. Change the passwords again, particularly if the malware scans showed anything.
5. Inform your bank and credit card companies.
6. Sign up for credit monitoring, and check the status frequently
7. Backup non-executable personal, data files to an external storage device. (Executable files might be infected).
8. You may have to bring the computer to a local repair shop, and tell them the story.
9. Tell friends what happened, so they can be aware of strange emails from you.
10. Connect to the internet only AFTER all the above have been done.
11. Change the passwords on all online accounts. Even better - access a "safe", uninfected computer, and change your online account passwords RIGHT NOW.
NOTE:
If your computer set a "Restore Point" while it was infected, any "System Restore" you make will re-infect your computer. Suggest you delete any potentially infected restore points and avoid setting such restore points until after your computer has been thoroughly cleaned!
You fell for one scam, and might be susceptible to others mentioned on this site:

Read that info to educate and help protect yourself!
Honest computer companies do NOT cold-call people, or cause popups from websites to tell them their computers need fixing!
Some scammers even have websites, and falsely advertise they are associated with popular software packages or computer companies; so do NOT believe a "we will fix your computer remotely" site, and allow them access to your computer!

Lesson:
If your computer needs fixing, bring it to a local repair shop - DEB| 1 replyLike an earlier report, this number was in a popup after a google search of a legitimate website. The message did not "speak" to me, but in the message it said that I had a virus, specifically a trojan horse virus, on your computer and to call this number, identified as a microsoft help number. I DID NOT CALL IT, but called my Apple Care number (I had a similar problem several years ago and saved the REAL Help number) to talk to someone at Apple. Was told this is not an Apple number and that I should keep my security apps up to date and will be okay.
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- BigA replies to DEBThey should have also told you to install an ad blocker and then those things would not pop up on your computer.
